Agris offers concrete starting points for a trip focused on hiking trails, landscapes and history. Two marked routes differ considerably in length and starting point. They are complemented by the Tardoire, a state forest to the west of the village and several landmarks from different periods. This lets you plan around the aspects of Agris that interest you most.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The Braconne-Bandiat hiking trail is 11.5 kilometres long, marked in purple and starts at Agris town hall. The Sentier du Casque runs for 22 kilometres, is marked in pink and starts at Pont d’Agris. The second route is therefore 10.5 kilometres longer. The route lengths provide a useful comparison for planning, while the marker colours and starting points help distinguish the two trails. As trail conditions can change, check the latest route information before setting out.

Agris’s landscape includes woodland, slopes and valleys. The Tardoire runs through the village for five kilometres. To the west of Agris lie 841 hectares of the Forêt domaniale de La Braconne state forest. The river, forest and varied landscape offer different perspectives on the area.

Historical Traces

The Church of Saint-Caprais in Agris dates to the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. It has been listed as a historic monument since 27 February 1925. One architectural detail is the narrow staircase near the entrance: flanked by loopholes, it leads to the vault. The church’s historical period and staircase with loopholes bring its history and architectural design to life.

The Grotte des Perrats offers a glimpse into Agris’s more distant past. Fragments of a Celtic helmet dating to the 4th century BC were discovered there. The cave is considered a Gallic sanctuary, later used as a Roman sanctuary; this use continued until the 3rd century AD. The find and its historical interpretation therefore belong to different periods. Those interested in archaeological traces will find a different perspective on local history here than at the Church of Saint-Caprais.

Another protected monument is the Croix de la Tuillère: a stone wayside cross standing 6.35 metres tall, which has been protected as a historic monument since 1986. Beneath the market hall in Place de la Grange are a limestone mill and a press. Both were probably used to extract walnut oil.

Things to Do in the Village

The tennis court near the football stadium in Agris can be used free of charge. Access conditions may change, so check the latest information on use in advance. A pétanque court is located at Square Guy Cyclope in the Pont d’Agris neighbourhood, on Route de la Rochefoucauld. It measures 14 × 4 metres.

When planning your trip, you can weigh up longer hiking routes, landscape interests, historical sites and recreational facilities. The routes differ in length, markings and starting points, while the cultural sites range from archaeological finds to protected buildings.
