For a trip to Ecuras, culture, landscape and outdoor activities offer different points of reference. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can start by comparing your priorities: cultural heritage, nature trails or riding opportunities.

Church, priory and local cultural history

The priory church of Écuras dates from the 11th century and forms the surviving core of a significant former priory complex. It preserves all the elements of its original floor plan: the nave, the apse-ended choir, the crossing and the two sacristies, which were originally barrel-vaulted. The crossing is the area where parts of the church intersect; the apse forms the end of the choir. The building can therefore be appreciated not only for its age but also for its architecture.

Local tradition includes the Saint-Étienne spring. Historically, it was reputed to cure many ailments, particularly incontinence and bleeding. Another cultural initiative is ÉcurArts: established in 2022, the project aims to develop and organise exhibitions, workshops and seminars in the centre of Écuras. The programme and opening hours may vary; check current dates before planning a visit.

Nature trails by theme and length

Écuras is characterised by wooded, hilly and green landscapes. The Vallée de la Renaudie nature reserve extends across Montbron, Écuras and Rouzède. The combination of limestone and granite soils has created diverse habitats that support many animal and plant species.

Three themed trails explore the area: the 4 km biodiversity trail, the 3.5 km geology trail and the 3 km water trail. The biodiversity trail is the longest listed, while the water trail is the shortest; the geology trail lies between the two. When choosing, you can therefore take into account both the theme and the stated distance.

Hiking trails, village fountains and climbing rocks

You can use the municipality’s trails on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. There are also climbing rocks within the municipal area. The village fountains and washhouses offer another point of interest: in 2013, Écuras restored them in 16 villages and linked them with two hiking trails. If you plan to follow one of these trails, check its current status.

Riding opportunities with different durations

Domaine des Limousines is a centre for equestrian tourism and horse boarding in the municipality. It offers one- to two-hour rides alone or in groups, as well as half-day, full-day and multi-day riding tours. The different durations make it easier to narrow down the scope of a planned riding experience. Availability may vary; check before booking.

Village Le Chat bathing area: information for the 2026 season

The 2026 bathing season at the Village Le Chat bathing area in Écuras was scheduled to run from 1 June to 1 October. As a precaution, swimming was prohibited from 27 July 2026: after green-coloured water was observed, the site was closed as a precaution because of suspected cyanobacteria. Before swimming there at a later date, check the current local status.
