Brossac: Pond, Heritage and Weekly Market
Accommodation in Brossac
Brossac combines a four-hectare freshwater pond with Gallo-Roman traces, historic buildings, scenic trails and a weekly market offering local produce. If you are looking for a hotel in Brossac, these themes can give your stay different focuses, depending on whether you want to include nature, local history, local produce or a mountain biking stage.
Water and landscape
Étang Vallier is a four-hectare freshwater pond. The Sentier Vallier passes through Brossac’s varied landscapes, including woodland, heathland and the Champagne landscape typical of the region. These two natural features offer different highlights: at Étang Vallier, the focus is on a single body of water with a precisely stated area, while the Sentier takes in several types of landscape.
Heritage in Brossac
The remains of the Gallo-Roman Villa de la Coue d’Auzenat are located in Brossac. An aqueduct belonging to the villa was discovered 62 metres north of it. This clearly links an archaeological site with a related find.
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité in Brossac was built on a hilltop in the 12th century. Its painted fresco was rediscovered in the sanctuary during restoration work. This brings together two points in time: the church’s medieval construction and the later rediscovery of the fresco during restoration work.
The covered washhouse in Bonneteau dates from the early 20th century and was converted into an educational pond in 1999. The washhouse on Rue de la Fontaine was restored and enhanced to enrich Brossac’s municipal heritage. The two sites therefore reflect different developments: a conversion in Bonneteau and a restoration on Rue de la Fontaine.
Weekly market and local produce
At Brossac’s weekly market, local producers offer cheese, beer, bread and brioche; vendors also sell fruit, vegetables and other local products. As individual vendors and their ranges may change, it is worth checking the current market day and what is on offer before your visit.
On Saturday mornings, the Arts Brossac association runs a coffee stand under the market halls. Brossac’s wood-fired oven also helps bring the market to life. The coffee stand and oven thus add further elements to the market experience alongside the stalls.
Cycling and events
Stage 28 of the Tour Charente VTT runs from Brossac to Yviers and starts at Étang Vallier. The forest trails include several steep climbs and descents. The emphasis differs from that of the Sentier Vallier: the VTT route’s character is shaped by changes in elevation, while the Sentier features landscapes of woodland, heathland and Champagne countryside.
Summer Thursdays are free world music concerts at the municipal stadium. As dates and the programme may change, check the latest announcements for your travel dates.
