In Nanteuil-En-Vallée, you can plan your stay around the history of the abbey and church, medieval buildings, and gardens. The Ancienne abbaye, the parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and the Jardins de l’Argentor each represent different aspects of the village. Also worth discovering are the late-medieval half-timbered houses and a free app tour of medieval architecture. When looking for a hotel, one question is especially helpful: are you more interested in architectural history, details in the village streetscape, or the gardens?

Abbey, church and historic functions

The built and unbuilt parts of the Ancienne abbaye have been fully protected as a Monument historique since 4 April 2017. The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste has its own chronology: it was rebuilt in the 13th century and remodelled in the 15th century after the Hundred Years’ War. These are separate phases, not parts of the same building project. The parish church has also been listed as a historic monument since 13 November 1989; the sacristy is excluded from this listing. The construction dates describe building phases, while the protection dates refer to the respective monument-protection status.

The Chapelle du Boisaugeais is a disused chapel; originally, it was a priory dependent on Nanteuil-En-Vallée’s Notre-Dame Abbey. The listed building Les grands greniers formerly served as the abbey’s guesthouse.

Architectural history in the village streetscape

Late-medieval half-timbered houses line the streets around the church in Nanteuil-En-Vallée. At Chez Galland, you’ll find a medieval passageway, carved lintels, a bread oven, and panoramic views of Nanteuil-En-Vallée’s rooftops and the deeply incised Argentor Valley. The half-timbered houses and the details at Chez Galland draw attention to different scales: whole houses on the one hand, and individual architectural features and views across rooftops and the valley on the other. Nanteuil-En-Vallée also holds the “Petite Cité de Caractère®” label.

Gardens and app tour

The Jardins de l’Argentor include a historic garden, a former botanical garden, a water garden created in the 1990s, and an arboretum designed by Eugène Bureau in 1932. Around 60 tree species are represented there, some of which are now protected. The dates refer to two different points in the gardens’ history: 1932 for the arboretum and the 1990s for the water garden. Admission is free all year round. Check this information again before your visit.

The Archistoire app offers a free guided tour of Nanteuil-En-Vallée’s medieval architecture, open to everyone. The app is available in the App Store and the Play Store. Before travelling, check whether the app and tour are available.

The Canal des Moines

The Canal des Moines was built in the 12th century to supply water to mills and tanneries. Unlike the church and half-timbered houses, the focus here is on the former water supply. Together, these offer perspectives on both architectural history and the practical function of medieval infrastructure.
