If you’re looking for a hotel in Lassay-les-Châteaux, considering the different themes to explore can help you plan your visit: Château de Lassay is known for its defensive architecture and guided tours, while gardens, the historic townscape and cider culture each offer their own appeal. Think about which of these themes you’d like to shape your stay.

Château de Lassay and its architecture

Château de Lassay has been classified as a Monument historique since 1862. Eight towers, curtain walls, an exceptional three-storey artillery bastion and two working drawbridges define its architecture. The combination of these features gives the château a distinctly defensive character.

Guided tours include furnished rooms and an armoury, as well as a kitchen with an unusual granite potager. The tour also includes a collection of antique copper objects and a walk through the romantic park. Check the tour arrangements before your trip.

Gardens with different highlights

The Jardin médiéval is directly connected to Château de Lassay and offers panoramic views of the château. Divided into four areas, it features medicinal and culinary plants, a vegetable garden with heritage varieties, and an orchard with espalier-trained fruit trees. Its layout showcases different garden styles and uses of plants. Espalier-trained fruit trees are guided into a specific, flat-growing shape, unlike trees left to grow freely.

The Roseraie is home to 300 varieties of roses. It is open for self-guided visits year-round; June to August is considered the best time to visit. Check seasonal visitor information before setting out.

Cultural attractions and cider

Notre Dame du Rocher is now used for exhibitions and cultural events. As the cultural programme may vary, check what is scheduled during your stay before travelling.

At the Musée du Cidre – Domaine de la Duretière, a self-guided museum tour explores cider-making, from harvesting the fruit to distillation. Displays of historic tools complement the tour. The visit ends with a tasting of products made on the farm: apple juice, cider, Poiré, Pommeau de Normandie, Douceur de Poiré, Calvados and Calvados Domfrontais. Check the opening arrangements before your visit.

Historic centre and other traces of the past

The historic centre of Lassay-les-Châteaux is built from local granite. Continuous rows of houses and narrow lanes running parallel to the main street define the townscape. Here, the focus is on the connected façades and the alignment of the lanes—a different architectural emphasis from the towers and fortifications of Château de Lassay.

The surviving remains of Château de Bois Frou are also among the town’s historic landmarks. They probably date from a structure built after 1590.
