Château-Gontier: History, Gardens and Art
Accommodation in Château-Gontier
Château-Gontier offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay focused on culture: historic churches, the Couvent des Ursulines, gardens, art collections and a wildlife sanctuary. The attractions span medieval architectural history, a seasonal performing arts programme, plants, animal care and a route along the Mayenne.
Churches and their history
The Chapelle du Genneteil, including its wall paintings, has been classified as a historic monument by decree of 9 July 1980. The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste represents a different historical period. It was completed in the second half of the 11th century and also served as a Benedictine priory and parish church in the 11th century. Considered the mother church of Château-Gontier, it is an important part of local history. The Romanesque church also has a notable crypt. The town thus brings together different periods of ecclesiastical history: the classified chapel with its wall paintings and the Romanesque church with its crypt.
The Couvent des Ursulines: building phases and culture
The Couvent des Ursulines has been a place of culture and education since 1631. Its complex includes the 15th-century Manoir de la Touche, acquired in 1634, as well as 17th-century convent buildings arranged around a cloister. The dates mark the time gap between the older manor house and the convent buildings. Le Carré’s programme is also part of the Couvent’s cultural profile: since 1991, it has presented around 30 performances each season across theatre, dance, circus, music and visual arts. As seasonal programmes and dates may change, it is advisable to check the programme for the relevant season before travelling.
Gardens along the Mayenne
Château-Gontier’s medieval garden is inspired by medieval gardens and is home to medicinal and aromatic plants. The Jardin du Bout du Monde has a different character: it lies on a steep slope on the banks of the Mayenne and has a play area for children. The gardens therefore have distinct features: medicinal and aromatic plants define one, while the other is distinguished by its riverside slope and play area. If the play area is important to your plans, check before your visit whether it is currently available.
Art collections and wildlife sanctuary
The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Château-Gontier is housed in the Hôtel Fouquet. It displays collections of ancient marble sculptures as well as numerous paintings by important masters. The art collection thus adds its own focus—sculpture and painting—to the architectural history of the churches and the Couvent.
At the Refuge de l’Arche, visitors can learn about rescued wild animals. The sanctuary cares for around 1,000 animals seized by the authorities or abandoned by private individuals. The wildlife sanctuary therefore offers a different focus from the historic buildings and art collections. Visitors interested in rescued wild animals will find this a fitting subject for their stay.
A stretch of trail along the Mayenne
The Circuit des Perrettes also leads to the Mayenne: at the end of the route, it follows the river along the towpath. This adds a specifically named stretch of route to the cultural sites and gardens. When planning your trip, you can take the town’s different attractions into account, from church and architectural history to art, animal care and the riverside trail.
