Contest offers two specific highlights to help you plan your trip: the architectural and artistic history around Saint-Martin and Le Grand Poillé, and the 4.5-kilometre main circular route. There are also distinctive individual sights and a flea market in September. Consider whether you would like to focus your time on architecture, a walk or an event in the village.

Saint-Martin Church and its works of art

Saint-Martin Church stands above the Mayenne. Its eastern end has a twin window dating from the 11th century. Two chapels, built in 1608, form a transept and gave the church its cruciform shape. The dates refer to different elements: the window and the chapels belong to separate building phases and should not be conflated into a single construction date.

The church’s present-day features include a monumental altarpiece made of tufa and marble, dating from 1658. The south chapel contains a carved bas-relief of the Rosary, also known as the “Vierge au lait.” Another named depiction, the “Vierge de Pitié,” is also in the church. The materials, dates and names give you several specific points of reference for distinguishing the works from one another.

Le Grand Poillé: features and protected status

The Le Grand Poillé ensemble includes a former courtroom dating from the 14th century, a manor house from the late 15th century, and a feudal motte with a water-filled moat. These features are among the parts of the ensemble classified as historic monuments by decree on 5 July 1996. The dates answer different questions: the 14th century and late 15th century date the features mentioned, while 1996 is the date of their classification. This distinction helps you separate the historical dating of the buildings from their later protected status.

Main circular route and distinctive sights

The main circular route in Contest is 4.5 kilometres long. This distance gives you a concrete measure for planning. The route offers a viewpoint over the Mayenne Valley and the weir with the “Grenoux” lock. The route description therefore combines views of the valley with a named structure on the water. In La Maigrière, you can also see a restored old well.

Another distinctive sight is the Arbre de Mai. It is considered unique in Mayenne and is a replica of the maypoles erected in Bavaria, Germany. These two details describe the same object from different perspectives: as a feature of note in Mayenne and through its explicitly named model in Bavaria. This helps distinguish the maypole from other local sights without confusing its regional significance with its design origins.

Visitor planning and flea market date

When planning your visit, also bear in mind the restrictions on viewing two private properties: Manoir de Poillé is privately owned and can only be admired from a distance. Moulin de Pontneau is also privately owned, and viewing it is likewise restricted to a distance. Take this limitation into account when deciding which places to include in your plans.

A flea market is organised in Contest on the third Sunday in September by the youth association “Sacrés Contestois.” If you would like to include the market in your trip plans, this calendar date is the specific point of reference; check the event date details in advance. Along with the church’s art, the historic features of Le Grand Poillé and the 4.5-kilometre circular route, the event offers another starting point for choosing the focus of your stay.
