Discover Loiré: churches, châteaux and nature
Accommodation in Loiré
Loiré combines a strong cultural heritage with a distinct natural setting. The parish church, chapels and several châteaux represent different periods of construction and architectural details; there is also a small woodland area with markedly different conditions in the north and south. If you are looking for a hotel in Loiré, you can plan your stay around the themes that interest you most: architectural history, nature or both.
Churches and chapels: dates and details
The parish church of Saint-Caprais et Saint-Laurent was built between 1862 and 1866 on the site of the former parish church. Its plans were drawn up by architect Pierre-Étienne de Coutailloux. The church has a basilica plan in the shape of a Latin cross. The nave is divided into four aisles and comprises four bays; it is joined by the transept, a chancel with one bay and the semicircular apse. A bay is a section of the longitudinal layout, while the number of aisles describes the division across it. The four aisles and four bays therefore refer to different architectural features of the nave.
The Chapelle de la Grande-Potherie was built in 1890. Its features include a false barrel vault and brickwork in the wall construction, cornice and side openings. The Chapelle de la Babinaie followed in 1896; its openings have tuff stone surrounds. The two buildings were constructed six years apart. At Grande-Potherie, the vault and brickwork on several building elements are distinctive, while at Babinaie, the surrounds of the openings provide the specific architectural detail.
Châteaux from different periods
The châteaux date from different periods, ranging from Château de Vallière, built around 1765, to buildings from the 19th century. Château des Noyers was built between 1845 and 1847; Château de la Rivière-d’Orvaux was built in the 1860s to plans by René Hodé. Château du Gué was the most important château in the commune on account of its history and is near the center of Loiré. Château de la Ferté is in a different location: it lies north of Loiré on higher ground. The two locations thus differ in their proximity to the center and their position to the north at a higher elevation.
