Seiches-Sur-Le-Loir combines a green setting with a distinctive architectural and local history. This brings two clear themes to the fore when planning your trip: woodland and nature along the Loir, and cultural sites around Matheflon. When looking for a hotel for your stay, consider whether nature watching or historic architecture better suits your plans.

Woodland, wetlands and birdwatching

The municipality has 200 hectares of woodland in its green surroundings. The Forêt de Boudré lies north of Seiches-Sur-Le-Loir and is designated an Espace Naturel Sensible in Maine-et-Loire. Wetlands and the Loir River surround the forest and form the Boucle du Loir.

Many birds now nest in former quarry ponds and can be observed from birdwatching posts. Here, traces of past use meet present-day nesting birdwatching. The transition from former quarries to nesting sites also makes the ponds a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in birdlife.

At the starting point of the walking trail in the Forêt de Boudré, there are toilets and picnic tables alongside the Parcours du Cœur car park. This also identifies the facilities available at the trailhead when planning a stay in the forest.

La vallée du Loir à Vélo, the Véloroute V47, is also available as a cycling option for Seiches-Sur-Le-Loir. Cycling and birdwatching therefore offer different interests alongside the woodland and landscape theme.

Château, chapels and local history

The Château du Verger and its extensive landscaped park are among the stops on the Circuit de Matheflon. The Chapelle de la Garde is also a stop on the route. Together, the château, park and chapel offer an overview of different aspects of the local cultural heritage.

The Château du Verger was built for Marshal de Gié after his return from Italy and was demolished between 1776 and 1783. It is listed as a historic monument; the listings date from 12 November 2001 and 26 June 2007. The château’s history can thus be set in context both through its construction and its later demolition.

The Chapelle de Matheflon is a notable example of local religious architecture. It began as a simple wooden keep overlooking the Loir. Its origins offer a different perspective on local history from the construction history of the Château du Verger: here, the focus is on the connection between the chapel, the keep and its commanding view of the river.

The Moulin de Matheflon adds another historical dimension. Built in the 18th century, it operated for many years, grinding grain into flour. Unlike the chapels and the château, the mill points to the former processing of grain. Together, the different buildings and their uses add to the picture of local history.
