When looking for hotels in Néville, you can choose your destination based on specific interests: history is reflected in memorial sites, historic buildings and a walking route. These span different periods. The Croix Hellouin commemorates an event from 1421; at the Croix la Rose, a signpost from the 17th century has been preserved. The Église Saint-Martin offers further points of interest, from its architecture to its organ. You can therefore plan your stay around your interests in history, religious architecture or a route through the town.

Memorial and historic signpost

The Croix Hellouin is a memorial at the site where Roger de Bréauté, lord of Néville, and his soldiers fell to English troops in 1421. It thus commemorates a specific event and ties it to a named place. The Croix la Rose was erected in 1624 and preserves a 17th-century signpost. It showed travellers the way to Dieppe and Le Havre. The crosses have different points of emphasis: the Croix Hellouin focuses on commemorating those who fell, while the Croix la Rose brings together its construction date and its former role as a signpost.

Building history of the Église Saint-Martin

Several construction and furnishing dates can be distinguished at the Église Saint-Martin. The transept dates from the 13th century; with the exception of this part, the church was entirely rebuilt in sandstone in the 16th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the older section from the later building phase, rather than assigning a single construction date to the whole church. The furnishings also have their own dates: the gallery dates from 1580 and has been listed as a historic monument since 1908. The organ was built in 1625 and is one of the oldest organs in the département. There are also 30 statues and numerous religious ornaments. The dates therefore refer to different elements: the 13th and 16th centuries relate to the structure, while 1580 and 1625 relate to the gallery and organ. This distinction makes the church’s different historical layers easier to understand.

Dovecote and regional setting

The dovecote in Néville is substantial; its size is considered an indication of the former fief’s seigneurial importance. It adds a connection to the former feudal structure to the memorials and church buildings. Néville is also near the Parc naturel régional des Boucles de la Seine normande. This regional setting places the town’s historical landmarks in a broader context.
