Countryside and Pétreval Stone
Between Mentheville and Annouville-Vilmesnil, a former tributary of the Ganzeville carved a small valley into the chalk plateau and exposed the so-called Pétreval Stone. Here, a carved valley and exposed limestone meet in the landscape. The “La Pierre de Pétreval” walking route runs between Mentheville and Annouville-Vilmesnil. Check route conditions before setting out.
Pétreval Stone is a very hard, rather grey limestone. It was used for many buildings, including stone church towers typical of the area. The material is therefore both part of the landscape and a feature of regional architectural heritage.
Church and architectural history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Mentheville was built in the 16th century and renovated in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its construction and later renovations thus span several centuries.
The bell tower has a square floor plan and is topped by an orthogonal spire. The floor plan describes the shape of the tower as seen from above; the spire forms its uppermost part. For architecture enthusiasts, both the tower's clear basic form and the distinctive shape of its spire are specific points of interest.
Experiences with horses and carriages
La Jumenterie des Néfliers offers full-day culinary horseback rides with picnics featuring regional products. There are also themed carriage rides to castles and manor houses, through the Ganzeville Valley, or focused on farming; each ride includes a snack break. For planning purposes, the full-day horseback ride is clearly distinct from the themed carriage rides.
For those looking for a multi-day option, Jumenterie itinerante offers covered wagon trips lasting two to six days. Each morning, it accompanies participants as they lead the horse. In terms of duration, the full-day culinary horseback ride contrasts with the two-to-six-day covered wagon trip. Check booking and availability before travelling; the multi-day trip should be arranged in advance.
Regional products and a cycling route
Les Ruchers de Florine runs a farm shop and honey workshop in Mentheville. It sells honey and products from the beehive. The range includes homemade gingerbread, summer, spring and chestnut honey, pollen, homemade hazelnut honey, beeswax candles, honey sweets, soaps and propolis. As access is seasonal, check before visiting.
The Boucle vélo Est route passes through the Pays de Caux and links cultural and culinary stops, including a stop at La Jumenterie des Néfliers. The cycling route thus offers a series of different stops, while the Jumenterie's carriage rides each focus on a particular theme. Check the route details before setting off.
