Gommerville: Château, Church and Hiking Trail
Accommodation in Gommerville
If you are looking for a hotel in Gommerville, you can choose what to focus on based on your trip: the Circuit de Filières offers hiking through the Pays de Caux countryside, while Château de Filières and Église Saint-Martin represent different chapters of local heritage. Here, countryside, hiking trail and architectural history come together in one destination.
Hiking in the Pays de Caux
The Circuit de Filières, an FFRandonnée route marked PR®, lets you discover the Pays de Caux countryside as well as the villages of Saint-Gilles-de-la-Neuville and Gommerville. The route is designated as a family hiking trail and starts at the Calvaire in Saint-Gilles-de-la-Neuville.
The starting point and places to discover offer different points of reference for the tour: it begins in Saint-Gilles-de-la-Neuville, while Gommerville is also among the places you can explore along the Circuit. If you enjoy getting around on foot during your stay, you can make this hike a specific focus when planning your trip.
Château de Filières and its surroundings
Château de Filières lies at the heart of a large clos masure, a landscape feature typical of the Pays de Caux, with planted embankments. The setting also includes the avenue known as La Cathédrale. The park was designed by André Le Nôtre.
The château’s architectural history spans several periods. Two bays and an adjoining wing date from the reign of Henry IV; the rest belongs to the period of Louis XVI. The Château also contains an 18th-century Chinese salon. Chinese paintings adorn its wood panelling.
The heritage designations distinguish between different parts of the estate: the two salons and the dining room were classified as a Monument historique by decree dated 13 December 1947. The rest of the château and the park were listed by decree dated 31 May 1946.
Visitors can explore the restored orangery and chapel. It is also possible to stroll around the Château through the park, among its centuries-old trees. Check visiting arrangements before your trip.
A concrete road at the Château recalls the German occupation during the Second World War. It was intended to serve as a launch ramp for V1 rockets aimed at London.
Église Saint-Martin: Romanesque architecture and stained glass
Église Saint-Martin in Gommerville is a 12th-century Romanesque church and part of the village’s religious heritage. Its architectural features include a hidden door.
The church has a group of nine stained-glass windows depicting standing saints and holy figures. Each window features two figures arranged in pairs. The related families Mirville, Dupré, Hocquart and Beaunay, along with Abbé Cacquerel, donated the group of stained-glass windows in the 1870s. The construction period, windows and door offer different points of interest if you are interested in religious architecture.
Other traces of local heritage
The history of the former castle is also present in Gommerville: the motte féodale is its only surviving remnant. The 14th-century castle belonged to Roger de Rames, a companion of William the Conqueror. The motte and the village’s later buildings thus point to different periods in its history.
Gommerville preserves the Ferme et le colombier des Rames. The Manoir and the Colombier de Rebomard also remain in the village. Together with the church, château and hiking route, these offer several different themes around which to plan your trip to Gommerville.
