Bonsecours offers visitors a range of experiences, from sacred architecture and historic sites to walks and views of Rouen. The main highlights are the Basilique Notre-Dame, the Monument Jeanne d’Arc and the Côte Sainte-Catherine archaeological site. The surviving Chemin du tramway and public performances also offer ways to get to know the town. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bonsecours, these highlights can help guide your stay: architecture, historical landmarks, scenery or music.

Basilique Notre-Dame and Monument Jeanne d’Arc

The Basilique Notre-Dame stands at a pilgrimage site dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is one of the first churches in France built in the Gothic Revival style. Religious significance and early architectural history come together in this building. The basilica and its surrounding railings were fully protected as historic monuments by decree on 24 August 2004.

The basilica is open continuously from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays. As these hours can be important when planning a visit, it’s a good idea to check them before you travel.

A 7-ton bell, installed in 1892 in honor of Cardinal Thomas, stands on the esplanade near the cemetery. It rings every Saturday and Monday. Because of its weight, the bell was not installed in the basilica. Its location on the esplanade makes it a distinct part of the ensemble surrounding the Basilique Notre-Dame.

The Monument Jeanne d’Arc was built in Bonsecours because there was not enough space for it in Rouen. It stands on the esplanade of the Basilique Notre-Dame de Bonsecours, overlooking the Seine Valley. Inside is a 2-meter-high statue of Saint Joan of Arc, created by sculptor Louis Ernest Barrias.

Historic landmarks and views

The Côte Sainte-Catherine archaeological site lies partly within the commune of Bonsecours and was listed as a historic monument by decree on 14 January 1993. Its remains include the Priory of Saint-Michel, the Abbey of the Trinity of Mont, also known as Sainte-Catherine, and the old and new forts of Sainte-Catherine. The site therefore includes both religious and military landmarks; the name Sainte-Catherine appears both in the site’s name and in the name of the abbey.

Descriptions of the views also emphasize different features. The Monument Jeanne d’Arc overlooks the Seine Valley. The Colline Sainte-Catherine – Panorama de Rouen offers a panoramic view of Rouen and both banks of the river. If views of the city are a priority for you, the explicitly described panorama across both banks is a useful point of reference; at the monument, by contrast, the view over the Seine Valley takes center stage.

Walks and public performances

The surviving Chemin du tramway is used for walks in Bonsecours. This walking route complements the historic sites associated with the basilica, monument and archaeological site. If you don’t want your stay to focus solely on architecture and local history, you can plan a walk here as a separate activity.

The École Municipale de Musique offers the public numerous concerts, shows and performances. If you’d like to combine your stay with a particular concert or performance, check the event date in advance. This makes it possible to factor the public music program into your plans without assuming a fixed event date.

When looking for a hotel in Bonsecours, you can first decide which of these aspects matters most for your trip: the basilica and its architecture, the historic landmarks, the views of Rouen, or a walk or performance. Checking specific opening hours and event dates can help you plan your stay around your preferred focus.
