Blainville-Crevon: Culture and History
Accommodation in Blainville-Crevon
Blainville-Crevon brings together several distinct cultural themes: medieval history at the Site Médiéval, the Collégiale Saint-Michel, art and literature at La Sirène, and the international cultural event Archéo Jazz. The Circuit du Crevon offers a different focus as a circular hiking route. If you are planning a trip, these themes can help you decide whether the town matches your interests; they differ in both subject matter and type of activity.
Medieval history at the Site Médiéval
The Site Médiéval de Blainville-Crevon lies in the green valley of the Crevon. It includes an 11th-century medieval motte, on which five successive castles were built between the 12th and 18th centuries. The sequence therefore spans the motte and several centuries of castle-building history, drawing attention to different building phases rather than a single castle. The medieval site is accessible to people with reduced mobility; a reserved parking space is available at the entrance. Individual guided tours of the Site Médiéval can be arranged on request.
The Collégiale Saint-Michel
Another historical landmark is the Collégiale Saint-Michel. Jean d’Estouteville, Lord of Torcy and Blainville, had it built in 1488 to establish a chapter of twelve canons there. This brings together a precisely dated founding purpose and a specific religious function. In the transept is a life-size statue of the Archangel Michael dating from the late 15th century. The masonry is made of sandstone and flint. The founding, the subject of the sculpture and the building materials offer different perspectives on the same site: its origins, its furnishings and its construction materials.
Art and literature at La Sirène
Art and literature are at the heart of La Sirène. It houses around 250 paintings and drawings left by Anatole Jakovsky. Most are works of naïve art; art brut and folk art are also represented. The works therefore encompass several artistic movements. La Sirène also has an extensive library devoted to art and literature. In this way, visual art and a library collection related to art and literature come together as distinct aspects of this cultural theme.
Archéo Jazz and a hiking option
Archéo Jazz is an international cultural event held every year in the heart of the Site Médiéval de Blainville-Crevon. It was launched to fund excavations and other work. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year in advance.
The Circuit du Crevon is an easy-rated circular hiking route measuring 9.8 kilometres. Its length and rating describe different features: the distance of the loop and its stated difficulty level. The hike therefore offers a different way to plan your trip than the town’s historical and artistic attractions. When choosing the focus of your trip, you can decide whether the circular route or the cultural attractions matter more to you.
