L'Etang-Bertrand can be explored through tangible traces of its paths, church and milling history. There is also the country route between Négreville and L'Etang-Bertrand, the Grosmont stream and a monument commemorating the history of the air war. If you are looking for a hotel in L'Etang-Bertrand, these topics can help you choose a destination that matches your interests during your stay.

Church and protected artworks

The Église Saint-Siméon-Stylite houses ten protected objects. The present building is an ogival structure and was probably built towards the end of the 19th century. “Ogival” refers to a pointed-arch form; the dating of the building is explicitly approximate.

The collection includes a baptismal font and statues of Saint Vincent, Saint Siméon and Saint Sebastian dating from the 19th century, a Mazuet stained-glass window from the 19th to 20th century, a 17th-century altarpiece, and a Madonna and Child. An altarpiece is a decorative structure behind an altar; its date makes it one of the earliest-dated pieces in this collection. The differing dates give the church an art-historical connection spanning several centuries.

Historic paths and milling history

The Carrière-Bertran was a medieval road that ran from Bricquebec to the Baie des Veys. A baronial charter dated 1395 attests to it as an old route. The charter describes the road from Bricquebec towards the fords of Saint-Clément and the bank near Buchierville. This places both the wider connection to the Baie des Veys and specific waypoints in the history of the road.

The Moulin de l'Étang-Bertrand is first mentioned in a document from shortly before 1204. In 1786, it is recorded as having two mill wheels: one was used for wheat and buckwheat, the other for barley. Several centuries therefore separate the early mention from this later glimpse of the mill's equipment. The two historical details show different aspects: the mill's early mention and the division of its uses in 1786.

Country route and landscape

The “Balade dans le bocage entre Négreville et l'Etang-Bertrand” runs mainly along country roads and paths. It is accessible to mountain bikes, pedestrians and horses. The route includes two crossings of lightly trafficked roads; in winter, there is a short wet section at the end. If you are planning the trip, take both the crossings and these seasonal trail conditions into account.

The Grosmont stream crosses L'Etang-Bertrand from west to east and flows into the Dalle. The route and the stream offer different points of reference: one is a route between two places, the other a watercourse with a stated direction of flow and point of confluence.

Remembrance and local food

The 9th US Air Force monument was inaugurated in June 2009. It commemorates the B-26 Marauder 41-31968 “Hearse for six”, which crashed at this site on 13 April 1944. The two dates distinguish the event from the later inauguration of the monument and give the memorial site a clear historical context.

The Auberge de la Vallée de la Douve is located in L'Etang-Bertrand in the Cotentin. It offers food for dining in or takeaway, including pizzas, burgers and homemade French fries. The menu may change; if you have a particular dish in mind, ask about the current menu.
