For a trip to Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, D-Day history and the coastal landscape offer different points of focus. Utah Beach and its monuments commemorate the landings; the Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Domaine de Beauguillot offers a different perspective on the commune and the Baie des Veys. There is also architectural history, beach activities and regional food. If you are looking for a hotel in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Utah Beach and the Memory of D-Day

Utah Beach is the only D-Day landing beach in the Manche département and is located in the commune of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. On June 6, 1944, 23,500 men landed there as part of Operation Overlord. The Musée du Débarquement Utah Beach stands at the site where American troops landed that day. It presents the events of D-Day in ten consecutive sections; the D-Day Museum opened in 1962. Numerous monuments also make Utah Beach a place of remembrance and tribute.

Another place of remembrance is the Monument Borne 00 on the Voie de la Liberté in the hamlet of La Madeleine. It marks the symbolic starting point of the memorial route, which traces General Patton’s U.S. Third Army advance from the landing beaches to Bastogne in Belgium over more than 1,145 kilometers. The museum, beach monuments and monument offer different perspectives, from presenting the events of D-Day to remembering a long military advance.

Architectural History and Architecture

Buildings also tell stories of different eras: the Chapelle Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt in the third quarter of the 20th century using remains of the earlier building. The church tower of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont has a square, originally Gothic lower section, above which are two octagonal stories in the Renaissance style. The history of reconstruction and the contrast between architectural styles offer topics of their own alongside the events of D-Day.

Nature at the Domaine de Beauguillot

The Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Domaine de Beauguillot is located in the commune of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, in the heart of the Baie des Veys. It includes mudflats, salt marshes, dunes, ponds and wet meadows. Observation points are freely accessible year-round for nature watching, and guided tours are also available. Those interested in the landscape can therefore choose between observation points for an independent visit and a guided tour.

Activities on the Beach and Trails

Swimming is permitted along the coast of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, but the beach is not supervised; part of it is reserved for birds. Check the current local notices before swimming. The Communauté de pleine nature d’Utah Beach offers land sailing and Longe-côte at Utah Beach. Its activities also include cycling on various types of bicycles, as well as walks on the beach and nearby trails.

There are two specific starting points for planning routes: the Musée du Débarquement Utah Beach is on the Vélomaritime cycle route, and a route from Carentan to Utah Beach is also available. The beach is also used by horse trainers, as noted locally: numerous trainers from the commune use it before or after competitions to help their horses relax and recover.

Regional Food

La CrĂŞperie Montoise prepares crĂŞpes and galettes in front of guests using artisanal and locally produced flours.
