Saint-Germain-de-Livet brings together a château museum, sacred architectural history and outdoor activities. The Château-Musée, the Église Saint-Germain and the circular walk “Autour du château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet” offer different thematic highlights. When looking for a hotel, you can weigh up whether you want your stay to focus on heritage alone or also include a walking tour or a ride on electric scooters.

Château-Musée and architectural history

The Château-Musée de Saint-Germain-de-Livet is designated a Musée de France and displays the furnishings and collections of the Riesener-Pillaut family. Listed as a historic monument, the building features architecture dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. A half-timbered manor house is joined to a structure built of stone and glazed bricks from Pré d’Auge. The Château therefore brings together different building styles; notable 16th-century frescoes in the service rooms preserve another historical layer.

The Château is surrounded by gardens and quiet moats. The combination of architecture, collections and landscape gives the château several distinct facets.

Church, cemetery and garden

The Église Saint-Germain has a Romanesque nave and a Romanesque choir. A seigneurial chapel was added to the south side of the choir in the 16th century, and its remains have been preserved. The combination of the Romanesque sections with this later addition makes the sequence of construction visible. The church also contains three orants classified as objects, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Orants are figures shown in prayer; these depict members of the de Tournebu family.

The cemetery of the Église Saint-Germain contains numerous graves, including very old graves in the form of steles. The Jardin de l’Abbé Marie is on the former parish cemetery between the Église Saint-Germain-de-Livet and the river that flows around the Château. Small perennial gardens are planted at the foot of the graves. The thematic distinction is clear: the Château-Musée combines architecture with the furnishings and collections of the Riesener-Pillaut family, while the church brings together Romanesque architectural history and sacred objects.

Circular walk and electric scooters

The “Autour du château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet” route is a 13.5-kilometre, moderately difficult circular walk that takes three hours. It starts at the Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet car park. After following a grassy path alongside a field, the route enters a wooded area. Its length, difficulty level and duration give you a concrete basis for planning your time; check the trail conditions before setting out.

As an alternative activity, Pays d’Auge Evasion offers guided all-terrain electric scooter rides starting at the Château. Rides last 1.5 or 3 hours and are described as suitable for families or friends. Compared with the three-hour circular walk, this means you can choose either a shorter scooter ride or an option of the same duration. You can weigh up the different ways of getting around according to your time and interests. Before planning, check whether a ride is available on your preferred date.
