When looking for a hotel in Potigny, start by asking whether you’d like your stay to focus more on mining and architectural history or on trails through the countryside. Potigny brings both themes together. The “Potigny, mine d’histoires” interpretation trail leads through the streets of the town with 20 illustrated information panels. The stops provide a theme for your walk and bring the town’s history to life in its streets.

Mining History in Housing Estates and Buildings

The miners’ housing estates offer a tangible introduction to Potigny’s architectural history. On Rue de la Libération, the “Vieilles Cités” consist of four blocks, each with six apartments. The blocks are built of limestone rubble masonry. The estates built by Edouard Lecomte—Cité de la Gare, Cité de la Sente aux Anes, Cité d’Ussy and Cité du Suvez—include eight distinct designs of brick houses with limestone friezes on their façades. These two examples make different use of limestone: as masonry in the Vieilles Cités and as a façade detail on the brick houses.

Another building points to the former water supply for the miners’ housing estates: Potigny’s former water tower has been repurposed and stands above a 20-metre-deep well that once supplied the estates with water. Potigny thus offers examples of different types of housing as well as a reminder of its former infrastructure.

Churches and Chapels

The nave, choir and bell tower of Église Notre-Dame du Rosaire date from the 13th century. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 11 October 1930. The date refers to these three parts of the building; 1930 is the year it was listed.

Chapelle Sainte-Barbe also brings together architectural and mining history: it was built entirely by volunteer miners. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners, firefighters and blasters. A Polish-language service is held on Sunday mornings at Chapelle Notre-Dame de Czestochowa. If you would like to attend, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Countryside and Hiking Trails at Brèche au Diable

Brèche au Diable is a natural and archaeological site in the nearby Laizon valley, shaped by water and time. Its steep paths offer hikers glimpses of local fauna, flora and legends. Nature, archaeology and traditional stories give the site its varied character.

A 2024 destination guide lists two circular hiking routes at Brèche au Diable, measuring 4.8 and 11.8 kilometres; both start at the church in Potigny. The longer loop is seven kilometres longer than the shorter one. Check the latest route information before setting out.
