Merville-Franceville-Plage: Dunes, Estuary and History
Accommodation in Merville-Franceville-Plage
When looking for a hotel in Merville-Franceville-Plage, you can plan your stay around your interests: natural areas and walking trails offer a different focus from local history and water activities. The destinations differ both in their themes and in how you can explore them.
Nature in the Orne Estuary and the dunes
The Orne Estuary is a protected natural area. Animal and plant species live there in rhythm with the tides and the seasons. At the heart of the estuary lies the Gros Banc ornithological reserve, which you can visit on a walk. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the aquatic habitats between land and sea in Merville-Franceville-Plage. The estuary therefore offers both a natural area shaped by the tides and seasons and a focus on birdlife.
The dunes of Merville form the largest remaining dune complex in the Calvados département and can be explored via walking trails. This distinguishes the dunes from the estuary: the dune complex and its trails shape how you explore the dunes, while the estuary is characterized by its protected area and the changing tides and seasons.
Historic sites with different stories
The Merville Battery has been preserved as a fully intact historic site. An educational trail leads between the various bunkers and tells the story of the site. Historically, it was a German Army fortification on the eastern flank of the Allied landings on 6 June 1944. The trail makes the history of the battery, told between the bunkers, the focus of your visit.
La Redoute de Merville is a small horseshoe-shaped fort built according to the principles of Vauban architecture to protect the bay. It was part of a group of three artillery works, built around the estuary in 1779–1780. La Redoute has an exhibition room about the history of the site and its restoration work, as well as a special exhibition that changes annually. The special exhibition programme may change.
The two sites offer different historical perspectives: the battery focuses on the bunkers, the educational trail and the events of 1944. At La Redoute, you can learn about the horseshoe-shaped fort, Vauban principles and the history of the group of artillery works; the exhibition room adds to this focus.
Walks and outdoor activities
As part of “Voile et Pagaie,” guided nature excursions are offered in the Orne Estuary. Rental and activities are also available with paddleboards, kayaks, pirogues, catamarans and dinghies, as well as Longe Côte (coastal walking). If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check current availability before your trip.
The Club Nautique marina is at the entrance to the Orne Estuary and has 200 berths. Check the availability of a berth before your arrival.
At Les Crins de la Baie, rides take place in small groups of riders. So, alongside walks and water activities, horseback riding offers another distinct way to get outdoors during your trip.
