Juaye-Mondaye: Abbey, Churches and Heritage
Accommodation in Juaye-Mondaye
Juaye-Mondaye is particularly defined by the Abbaye Saint-Martin de Mondaye. It is a Premonstratensian monastery located in the French commune of Juaye-Mondaye in the Calvados department of Normandy, and is also a very active cultural centre. Other historic sites include the Church of Saint-Vigor, which stands above the village of Juaye, and the Château de Juaye, which is partially protected. This gives you several different themes to explore when planning your trip: monastic culture, a church with several historical periods, and the architecture of a château.
The Abbey: Architecture and Visits
The abbey church and monastery buildings form a Neoclassical ensemble built by Eustache Restout in the 18th century. Neoclassical describes an architectural style inspired by antiquity; here, the term helps to identify the style of the ensemble. Parts of the abbey are classified as historic monuments, while others are listed as protected historic monuments.
On a guided tour, you can explore the abbey church and convent buildings, including the sacristy, library, cloister, chapter house and refectory. Tours take place every Sunday and daily in July and August. Outside of services, you can visit the abbey church freely. If you would like to see the convent areas mentioned as well as the church, a guided tour is the right option. Check the tour schedule before your trip.
Other Historical Perspectives
The Church of Saint-Vigor stands above the village of Juaye. Its choir is thought to date from the 11th or 12th century. The church was altered in the 18th century as part of the Counter-Reformation and abandoned towards the end of the 19th century. The early dating applies to the choir, while the alterations and abandonment relate to later periods in the church’s history. This keeps the choir’s possible age distinct in time from the later interventions.
The Château de Juaye is also partially protected as a historic monument. The protected features include the façades and roofs, the two open staircases with balustrades, the staircase with its wrought-iron railing, the vestibule, and the grey and green ground-floor salons, including their furnishings. The protection therefore covers both exterior elements and specific interior rooms and their furnishings.

Cycling is also associated with Juaye-Mondaye: cycle route 10, “Abbaye de Mondaye,” connects Bayeux with Juaye-Mondaye. If both places are part of your trip, you can take this connection into account when planning. It offers a practical option for travellers who would like to consider a cycling route alongside the historic sites.
