Le Tourneur brings together bocage landscapes, hiking trails and various traces of local history. Three themes are particularly useful when planning your trip: the landscape, routes on foot or by mountain bike, and local history. The specific route names and distances make it easier to compare the trails; the historical references range from the battles for liberation to local legends. This makes it possible to understand the area both through its trails and through its memorial sites and stories.

Bocage and Daffodils

Le Tourneur is known for its bocage landscapes, particularly around the Courbençon loops. The hiking trail “Le sentier des jonquilles” offers a specific connection with nature: it passes through woodland where wild daffodils grow. The route starts at the Aire du Moulin-Pinel picnic area in Le Tourneur, is 3.3 kilometres long and is rated easy. Daffodil cultivation is also part of the area’s history: it inspired the first spring festival of the Bocage virois. You can therefore encounter the daffodil theme both along a trail and in the area’s cultural context.

Compare Hiking Trails by Distance

The “Circuit des lavoirs” is also one of Le Tourneur’s hiking trails. “La balade des écrevisses” and “La vallée de la Souleuvre” offer further specific points of comparison: both start in Le Tourneur and are rated moderate. The first route is 4.8 kilometres long, the second 7.2 kilometres. Together with the 3.3-kilometre “Sentier des jonquilles”, rated easy, they provide a clear guide based on length and difficulty rating. The daffodil trail is the shortest of the three; the two moderate trails differ in distance. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Mountain Biking Routes

The mountain biking routes can also be compared directly by length and difficulty rating. The activity matters when considering the name “La Vallée de la Souleuvre”: as a hiking trail, “La vallée de la Souleuvre” starts in Le Tourneur, is 7.2 kilometres long and is rated moderate. The “La Vallée de la Souleuvre” mountain biking route also starts in Le Tourneur, is 4.64 kilometres long and is rated very easy. A much longer mountain biking option is “Le Mont Chauve”: it starts in the area, covers 26.77 kilometres and is rated difficult. When comparing routes, pay attention to the route names and activities, not just their shared starting point. Check the conditions for each route before setting out.

History, Remembrance and Stories

The church in Le Tourneur was set on fire during the battles for liberation on 31 July and 1 and 2 August 1944. A memorial stele erected at Porte aux Bissons commemorates the events of the liberation and those involved in liberating the commune. The Chapelle Saint-Quentin belongs to another part of the area’s history: it is dedicated to a healing saint and is part of Le Tourneur’s religious and popular history. The area is connected with local legends and mysteries through the Château des Noyers, described as a haunted castle. A literary connection leads to the hamlet of Feuillet: it gave its name to the family from which the novelist and playwright Octave Feuillet came. These different connections give you several themes through which to understand Le Tourneur beyond its landscapes and trails.
