Le Gast combines Lac du Gast with birdwatching and granite heritage. The 66-hectare drinking water reservoir, a nature trail, an orchard variety garden and the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste give the area several specific points of interest. When looking for a hotel in Le Gast, the theme of your stay can help guide your choice: would you like to focus on nature and the protected area, or are you particularly interested in granite history and church architecture? Nature and cultural heritage represent distinct interests.

Nature at Lac du Gast

Lac du Gast lies on the edge of the Saint-Sever forest and is a 66-hectare drinking water reservoir. Its location on the edge of the forest and its function as a reservoir describe two different aspects of the lake: it is part of the landscape and also serves a specific purpose.

There is a nature trail with information panels at Lac du Gast. The trail is wheelchair accessible. The panels give the route an educational focus and complement a visit to the lake with an opportunity to explore nature. If you are planning your visit around nature, the trail is a distinct point of interest alongside the lake itself.

The site also includes an orchard variety garden with around 40 varieties of apple, pear and cherry. The collection features three types of fruit and puts their diversity at the forefront. The garden therefore complements the nature trail with another focus: rather than a path with information panels, it centres on a collection of different fruit varieties.

Birdwatching is also a specific part of the nature experience at Lac du Gast. The ornithological reserve was established on 2 August 1988. The circular trail around the lake includes three birdwatching points around the protected area. The nature trail and the circular route offer different experiences: information panels accompany the nature trail, while the three points are for birdwatching.

Granite history and routes

The “Granit – Mémoire de pierre” programme includes the “Randonnées de chant et de pierre”. As a way of bringing the subject to life, these combine traditional songs with visits to local granite production sites and accounts from eyewitnesses. Music, granite production sites and personal memories thus come together as part of the granite heritage theme. In weighing up your interests, this means that alongside the landscape and nature observation, there is also an approach that brings together local granite history and passed-down experiences.

The tourist route “La Route du granit”, also known as “La pierre percée”, is around 50 kilometres long and passes by Lac du Gast. Its connection to the lake and granite as its guiding theme bring together nature and culture in a single route description.

Another type of route is the “En lisière de forêt” cycling route: it is designed as a scenic circular ride and features Lac du Gast as a prominent destination or stopping point. The two routes can be distinguished by their different focuses: “La Route du granit” is the approximately 50-kilometre tourist route; “En lisière de forêt” is a circular cycling route characterised by its natural setting. You can therefore use the granite theme or the cycling route as a starting point for planning your trip without treating the two routes as one and the same.

Church architecture in Le Gast

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Le Gast dates from the Romanesque period; some of its features date from the 17th century. Its floor plan is laid out as a Latin cross and ends in a five-sided apse. The two descriptions refer to different parts: the Latin cross describes the overall layout, while the pentagon describes the shape of the apse. Together with its different historical layers, the church offers a distinct cultural and historical focus alongside nature and granite history.

You can therefore easily distinguish between the area’s offerings when choosing a focus for your visit: at Lac du Gast, the nature trail, variety garden and birdwatching take centre stage; the granite route and the “Randonnées de chant et de pierre” turn the focus to granite heritage. The church adds architectural history to the mix.
