Combray: Countryside, Mills and the Middle Ages
Accommodation in Combray
Combray is a commune in the Suisse Normande, located on the Bretteville/Laize–Pont d’Ouilly route. Its landscape, local history and a specific activity offer different starting points for planning your stay.
Landscape and the history of the mills
South of Combray, the Fontaine Saint Clair stream runs from east to west. The Vallée des Vaux is a local landscape area. Combray once had three mills, one of which was in the Vallée des Vaux. Only ruins of the former mills remain today. Here, two distinct connections with the past come together: the course of the stream traces a line through the landscape, while the ruins recall the history of the former mills. The number of mills and their present state of preservation make clear that the village’s historic appearance differs from its present-day landscape.
Medieval traces and St Martin’s Church
The only surviving trace of the former castle is a medieval motte-and-bailey earthwork, now called “la grande cour.” The castle’s history is thus preserved in an earthwork, while ruins remain of the former mills. These different traces offer several points of entry into the village’s history.
St Martin’s Church is also part of Combray’s historic character. It is under the patronage of the Abbey of Fontenay. Herringbone masonry, carved corbels and several window openings point to the church’s medieval origins. The terms describe different elements of its architecture: herringbone masonry refers to the arrangement of the stones, while corbels are projecting structural elements; those at St Martin’s are carved. Stones in the church bear dates ranging from 1499 to 1733. The architectural forms, dates and patronage thus offer different historical perspectives on the church, rather than focusing on a single feature.
Circular walk and puzzle trail
The “Les Bois de Combray” circular walk passes through forests and picturesque villages, showcasing the landscape of the Suisse Normande. The route therefore puts the surrounding landscape in the foreground. Route conditions may change; check them before setting out.
“L’initiation de Tristan” is a family-friendly puzzle trail in Combray for children aged seven and up. It includes puzzles and challenges. In one of its story-based stops, a young squire takes the first steps in his training to become a knight. The trail combines activities with a story about the beginning of a knight’s training. Check availability before your trip; details of the activity may change.
The two activities differ mainly in their focus: the circular walk highlights forests, villages and the landscape of the Suisse Normande, while the trail centers on puzzles and the story of the young squire. You can plan accordingly, depending on whether you are looking for a scenic walk or a family-friendly puzzle activity.
