Caumont-l'Éventé offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a stay: the historic town center, the history of slate mining, digital cultural offerings and memorial sites relating to the Battle of Normandy. La Butte de Caumont also offers a way to explore the surrounding area as a walking route and nature experience. Depending on your interests, you can give different weight to culture, local history, remembrance and landscape.

Town Center and Historic Markets

The town center of Caumont-l'Éventé was built in 1532 and stands on a hill at the foot of which the Aure rises. The year places the town center in its historical context, while the hill and spring describe its location. Another historic highlight is the butter market of Caumont-l'Éventé: in the first half of the 18th century, it was one of the most important in France. These two details relate different periods in the town's history—the construction of the center in the 16th century and the market's significance in the 18th century. This lets you understand the local heritage not only through its buildings, but also through its earlier market history.

Slate Quarry and Souterroscope

The Souterroscope is located in a former slate quarry that has not been worked since 1960. The visit introduces the different water cycles and the extraction of slate. The quarry's former use and the water cycles are presented as two separate themes. The guided sound-and-light tour starts automatically every twelve minutes. Before your visit, check whether it is available on your preferred date.

Digital Culture at the Micro-Folie

The Micro-Folie includes a digital museum featuring fine arts, architecture, scientific cultures and the performing arts. It also offers virtual reality content, including ARTE content, as well as a FabLab. Visits to the FabLab are by appointment. The different areas offer several cultural focuses, from architecture and art to scientific cultures and digital formats. When planning, you can therefore consider which of these topics interest you most.

Memorial Sites and Landing Beaches

A map at the Observatoire du Débarquement in Caumont-l'Éventé depicts the advance of Allied troops from June 6 to 13, 1944. A commemorative stele there marks the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy. The landing beaches lie opposite the Observatoire, about 30 km away, and can be seen in clear weather. These offer different points of reference: the advance over a defined period, the commemoration of an anniversary and the view of the beaches. You can experience the site through its historical account, memorial and landscape.

La Butte de Caumont and the Landscape

The La Butte de Caumont walking route invites you to discover Caumont-l'Éventé and its panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It offers a nature experience in the land of slate quarries. Caumont-l'Éventé itself is situated on high ground. The walk therefore offers a different focus from the town's cultural and historical themes. If you would like to include nature and local history in your stay, you can consider them as distinct aspects of your visit.
