Herly can be explored through its rural architecture and the Sentier des Trois Clochers. The settlement extends along a departmental road and includes the hamlets of Bellevue and Hénoville. The village features architectural styles from several centuries alongside memorial sites, while the walking trail connects Herly with Bécourt and Preures. If you are considering Herly as a destination, you can plan your stay around two distinct themes: the architectural details in the village or the route through the bocage countryside.

Herly’s rural architecture

Herly’s rural landscape includes large brick farmsteads from the first half of the 20th century, as well as traditional farmhouses and barns from the 18th century with wattle-and-daub walls. Along the road to Quilen, three traditional farmsteads have been preserved with their original building forms, openings and colours from the time they were built in the 18th century; a bakehouse has also been preserved there. The comparison reveals the difference in age: the large brick farmsteads date from the first half of the 20th century, while the traditional farmsteads, farmhouses and barns date back to the 18th century.

Church, war memorial and school building

The Church of Saint-Pierre d’Herly preserves a portal dating from the late 18th century. The war memorial was inaugurated on 25 September 1921, later renovated and reinaugurated on 20 November 1998. A statue of a poilu leaning on his rifle stands on a plinth made of Soignies stone. The two dates distinguish the original inauguration from the one held after the renovation; the statue and its stone plinth also give the memorial a tangible form.

Herly’s school building was constructed in the 19th century and combines the scale of typical schools of the French Third Republic with three projecting sections and an interwar Anglo-Norman style. Six wayside crosses line the route between Herly’s hamlets. Together with the church, school and war memorial, they broaden the view of local heritage beyond individual large buildings.

Walking through the bocage countryside

The Sentier des Trois Clochers begins in Herly’s village square. Depending on the route option chosen, it is 6 to 9 km long and is considered very easy to access, as well as suitable for young children. Check the current trail conditions before setting out. The route connects Herly, Bécourt and Preures through the bocage countryside, passes three rural churches and offers open views over the Créquoise Valley. The stated distance makes it possible to compare the route options, while the churches and valley views shape the landscape setting described for the trail.
