Discover Nœux-Les-Mines
Accommodation in Nœux-Les-Mines
Nœux-Les-Mines offers several reasons to stay: mining history, architecture, modern and contemporary art, and board sports. The Église Sainte-Barbe, the Musée de la mine, the Donation Ladislas Kijno and the Loisinord complex each offer a distinct focus. This means the destination cannot be reduced to a single attraction.
Architecture, Mining History and Art
The Église Sainte-Barbe was built in 1878 and designed by architect Constant Moyaux. It is protected in its entirety as a Monument historique; it was listed by a decree dated 9 October 2009. The building is therefore a distinct architectural and historical highlight alongside the town’s mining and artistic themes.
The Musée de la mine de Nœux-les-Mines recreates 200 metres of mine tunnels and workings. It brings together modern technology from the era of iron and electricity and older timber-support techniques. This contrast makes the evolution of working methods a tangible subject. The museum is housed in a former training centre where 14-year-old Galibots learned the mining trade. It thus explores both technical working methods and the training of young miners. Visits are available by prior reservation and subject to guide availability.
The Donation Ladislas Kijno is a museum of modern and contemporary art. Its permanent exhibition includes 60 works by Ladislas Kijno, who was from Nœux-les-Mines. The Donation offers guided tours, performances and workshops on artistic practice for all audiences; educational and artistic projects are also available for groups. This gives it a different focus from the mining museum: the emphasis is on artworks and artistic practice rather than reconstructed mine tunnels.
Board Sports and Loisinord
The Loisinord sports and leisure complex comprises two facilities mainly dedicated to board sports: the Stade de Glisse and the Stade Nautique. The Stade de Glisse has a synthetic piste covering an area of 10,000 m² and measuring 320 m in length. These precise dimensions give the facility a clear profile among the leisure activities available in Nœux-Les-Mines. Loisinord is therefore a distinct attraction for travellers who would like to include board sports alongside historical and artistic interests.
Terril du Belvédère and Walking Trail
Terril du Belvédère is located in the town centre and offers panoramic views over the mining landscape. Nature has reclaimed the site, which is home to many animal and plant species. Landscape and mining history come together here: the terril is a testament to the mining landscape and also a site with diverse flora and fauna.
The 4 km walking trail “A la découverte du patrimoine minier - autour de Noeux-les-Mines” starts at the Stade de Glisse and passes by the terril. This named route links two distinct points of interest: the Loisinord complex at the starting point and the panoramic views over the mining landscape from the terril. Its length and route provide practical guidance when weighing up the town’s cultural attractions, board sports or a walk through the mining landscape.
