Explore Cucq through its coastal dunes, the development of Stella-Plage, and walking and water activities. When looking for a hotel in Cucq, your main interest may help you decide: would you like a challenging hike to be the highlight of your stay, are you interested in dune conservation, or would you like to discover maritime and architectural history? These different themes offer a range of starting points for planning your trip.

Dune Landscape and Walking Trails

Cucq’s coastal dune belt formed as the sea receded and sand covered former marshes. The Stella-Plage dune system is home to sea buckthorn, dog roses and marram grass, and lies within a Natura 2000 area. Its formation, plant life and protected status each give the landscape a distinct connection with nature.

The Sentier des dunes starts in Cucq and is a difficult circular hiking trail. It is 12 kilometres long and takes an average of three hours. The route passes through white, embryonic and grey dunes, as well as the Bois Joly; the dune landscape along the trail is also part of the Natura 2000 area. Plan for a longer hike and check local conditions before setting out.

The Sentier des violettes offers another perspective on dune conservation. Fossés goats and Shetland sheep graze there year-round to protect the biodiversity of the dunes. Alongside plant life and landscape features, the care of this habitat is also in focus.

Water Activities and Planning Your Time

Longe Côte – Le sentier de l’Étoile is a water activity offered year-round at the Stella-Plage water sports centre for people over 16. A one-hour introductory session with equipment provided is available. As schedules and availability may change, check the current dates before making firm plans for this activity.

The Club Nautique Stellien offers year-round introductory and advanced land sailing courses with a state-qualified instructor. The course levels distinguish between beginners and those looking to improve existing skills. To help plan your time, you can compare the possible one-hour introduction to Longe Côte with the Sentier des dunes, which takes an average of three hours: these are different activities, one a water activity and the other a difficult circular hike.

History and Architecture

Stella-Plage became one of France’s largest subdivision developments in the first half of the 20th century. The small houses known as stelliennes date from the post-war period and are associated with Stella-Plage’s building boom from the 1950s onwards. Place de l’Étoile in Stella-Plage also has a connection to another place: it was inspired by Place de l’Étoile in Paris.

The Church of Sainte-Thérèse-de-l’Enfant-Jésus is another architectural landmark. The square concrete building has a hipped roof and a tympanum with stained glass. These clearly identifiable architectural features offer concrete points of interest if you are curious about the area’s architecture.

The wreck of Les Aulnays, an English cargo steamer on Stella-Plage’s tidal beach, is part of the area’s maritime history. It is partly buried in sand, and how much of it is visible changes as the sand shifts. The wreck provides another historical point of interest alongside the area’s architectural and settlement history.
