Dannes – Nature, Coastal Trails and History
Accommodation in Dannes
At Mont Saint-Frieux, trails and landscapes take centre stage; Saint-Martin Church, the former Roman road and a memorial stele on the beach offer cultural and historical perspectives. If you are deciding whether nature, outdoor activities or history should shape your trip most, the specific trail lengths, construction periods and local connections provide useful points of reference.
Nature among chalk, sand and habitats
The Dannes-Camiers site is a complex of fossil cliffs made of chalk, with ecologically significant calcareous grasslands. At Mont Saint-Frieux, waves of dunes accumulated against the limestone at the beginning of the Middle Ages. The contact between chalk and sand created an area of high ecological value. This combination of limestone, sand and habitats gives the landscape its distinctive character. The Dannes-Camiers site is home to numerous butterflies, including the slender argus. Its protected-area designation is also part of its natural character: the slopes of Dannes-Camiers, with the exception of the Eqiom quarry, are part of the “Coteaux de Dannes-Camiers” Natura 2000 site and make up 60 percent of this protected area. The butterfly populations and protected status add an ecological perspective to its geological distinction.
Trails and coastal scenery at Mont Saint-Frieux
There are two named routes at Mont Saint-Frieux, with different distances: the Pomme d'Or walking trail is 1.7 kilometres long, while the Chablis circular trail is 3.2 kilometres. The difference is 1.5 kilometres, allowing you to compare the distances of the two options directly. The coastal trail at Mont Saint-Frieux lets you explore the coast while passing natural sites. The summit of Mont Saint-Frieux also offers a striking viewpoint. The coastal trail and the summit view provide two different perspectives on the landscape: a route through natural sites and a view from above.
Church, Roman road and remembrance
Saint-Martin Church dates from building periods in the 15th and 16th centuries and is protected through listing under a decree dated 10 June 1926. The choir is attributed to the patronage of François de Créqui and Marguerite Blondel in the early 16th century. The church can therefore be understood both in terms of its building periods and through a specific historical attribution. Dannes lay on the former Roman road between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Étaples. This historical connection to the road adds another aspect of local history to the church’s building history.
A memorial stele inaugurated on Dannes beach in 2014 commemorates the sacrifice of around 2,000 airmen who lost their lives in the département between 1939 and 1945. The stele links a specific place with remembrance of the war years; the geographical scope of the memorial extends beyond the beach to the département.
