When planning a trip to Aix-En-Ergny, three highlights stand out: the Le Tronquoy route, the landscape along the Aa, and examples of local architectural history. Meadows and old paths shape the landscape; the Motte Féodale and Saint-Léger Church offer tangible points of reference for exploring earlier building styles. The route also has a stated walking time and difficulty level. Together, these themes connect the village with both nature and culture.

Hiking and Landscape

The Le Tronquoy route starts on Rue de l’Aa. A description updated on August 18, 2025, lists it as an easy hike taking 1 hour and 30 minutes. Check the duration and difficulty rating again before setting out. The route also has a covered picnic table; briefly check its condition before your visit. The walking time gives you a concrete basis for fitting the hike into your day, while checking again takes the stated duration and difficulty into account.

Aix-En-Ergny lies along a stretch of the Aa and is characterized by numerous meadows and old paths. The commune is part of the continental ZNIEFF Type 1 area “La haute Aa et ses végétations alluviales entre Remilly-Wirquin et Wicquinghem.” The French title refers to the upper Aa and its alluvial vegetation between Remilly-Wirquin and Wicquinghem. Aix-En-Ergny is also among the communes in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve “Marais audomarois - Aa - Hem - Flandres,” which received its designation in July 2024. Its connection with the Aa and its inclusion in the Biosphere Reserve are two distinct points of reference for exploring the natural environment.

Historic Architectural Features

At Le Tronquoy, the Motte Féodale is considered one of the best-preserved remnants in the Haut-Pays. A motte féodale is a medieval fortification built on an artificially raised mound. The motte is therefore a historic point of reference, distinct from the later structural elements of Saint-Léger Church.

Saint-Léger Church was rebuilt in the 17th century; its portal and part of its nave have survived. Its bell dates from 1712 and is housed in a wall bell tower, known as a clocher-mur or campenard. This type of bell tower is characteristic of the Montreuillois. The rebuilding and the bell’s date represent two different time references: the 17th century for the church’s reconstruction and 1712 for the bell. Its architectural history can thus be considered through its period, surviving features and bell-tower style.

Another striking landmark is the obelisk-shaped war memorial at the entrance to the cemetery. It adds a distinct place of remembrance to the motte and the church. Together, the three structures represent different forms: a medieval fortification, a church with a wall bell tower, and an obelisk-shaped memorial.

Planning the Focus of Your Trip

The route provides a concrete timeframe for a hike, while the buildings invite you to focus on their form and history. If you would like to include both in your stay, you can plan the hike around its duration and consider Saint-Léger and the motte as separate cultural highlights. Aix-En-Ergny therefore offers both a connection with the natural environment and tangible historic architecture to help you choose the focus of your trip.
