Get to know Valence-D'albigeois through its specific market days, church art and the natural landscape of the Haute Vallée du Cérou. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your travel days around the markets while also taking into account the town's historical and landscape features.

Markets by day of the week

The Sunday morning market takes place at Place de l’Eglise. Combes Primeur and Les Saveurs du Puy Saint Georges sell their goods there; Les Saveurs du Puy Saint Georges is a butcher and charcuterie. Morning markets are also held at Place du Foirail: on Tuesdays, Puech Primeur, the La fromagerie du Levezou cheese shop (Roques) and La ferme de Vers (Ramamouneau), a butcher and charcuterie, are represented. A market with Boucherie Resseguier takes place there on Thursday mornings.

The dates therefore differ both by day of the week and by market location: Sunday takes you to Place de l’Eglise, while the two weekday markets take place at Place du Foirail. If a particular market is important to your trip, check the current times and vendors in advance. Municipal market information and participating vendors may change.

Landscape and bird population

The ZNIEFF Haute Vallée du Cérou also includes the commune of Valence-D'albigeois. The landscape features described include wooded slopes of deeply incised valleys, rock outcrops, small cliffs and dry heathland. This list illustrates the area's varied natural features, from wooded slopes to rocky areas and heathland.

A survey dated June 12, 2024, records eleven breeding birds of prey in the ZNIEFF. These include four species considered rare to very rare in the Tarn département: the Short-toed Snake Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Montagu's Harrier and Eurasian Eagle-Owl.

Church art and local history

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption dates from the 16th century and has been extensively altered. Inside is a 17th-century Pietà, made of polychrome wood with metal overlays. A Pietà depicts Mary with the dead Christ. The bright nave is illuminated by 18 stained-glass windows by master glazier François Soleille. The church thus brings together architectural history, a specific work of art and a larger group of crafted windows.

Place du Coq also preserves a historic architectural detail: two stone arcades remain from its origins. In a historical account published in 2017, they are considered the only evidence of the historic past of the bastide of Valence-D'albigeois. The arcades therefore provide a tangible reference point for local history alongside the architectural history of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption.

A chapel in Valence-D'albigeois was built in 1880 under the direction of Bishop Etienne Ramadié. Its interior has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1985. A 2012 report describes restoration work on the chapel: Jacques Viard restored ten wall paintings and either restored or completely remade 15 stained-glass windows. The construction date, monument status and later reported work place the chapel in several distinct historical periods.

Lac de Ginestous

Lac de Ginestous is listed as a sports facility in the commune. If you include this place in your travel plans, check current municipal information before visiting, as the sports facilities inventory may change.
