Peyregoux: Church, Bagas and village history
Accommodation in Peyregoux
The Église Saint-Pierre, the Bagas and local producers offer different ways to explore Peyregoux. A voie verte nearby adds a regional route to the local attractions.
Église Saint-Pierre and its construction phases
The Église Saint-Pierre in Peyregoux was listed as a Monument historique by decree on 20 August 2008; the notice from the Ministry of Culture was updated on 2 June 2026. Romanesque architectural remains from the second half of the 12th century survive in the choir. In 1884–1885, the church received new painted decoration, attributed to Jacques and Paul Pauthe. This makes it easy to distinguish the medieval traces from the much later decorative phase.
The Bagas and local history
The Bagas runs through Peyregoux and is 21.1 kilometres long. It rises in the commune of Montfa and joins the Agout on its right bank in Vielmur-sur-Agout. The watercourse is also connected with the history of the medieval village fort: the fort’s ditches were supplied with water thanks to the Bagas’s proximity. No visible elements of the fort remain. This brings a specifically described river course together with a historical connection to the village, even though no visible remains of the fort survive today.
A regional route nearby
Near Peyregoux, the 44-kilometre voie verte “Les Chemins des Droits de l'Homme” follows a former railway line between Albi and Castres. It is a three-metre-wide, surfaced sand track, open to all non-motorised users. Unlike the church and the Bagas, the route points to a broader regional context. Its length, surface and permitted users provide specific details to help you decide whether it suits your travel plans.
