Moissac: Pilgrimage Route, Canal Bridge and Art Deco
Accommodation in Moissac
Whether you choose based on the route, an architectural landmark or a particular date, you can decide according to the purpose of your trip. An interactive puzzle activity is another way to explore the town.
Canal Bridge and Pilgrimage Route
The Pont Canal du Cacor was built in 1845 and is 356 metres long. It is France’s third-longest canal bridge, preceded by the bridges at Briare in the Loiret department and Agen in the Lot-et-Garonne department. This ranking puts the structure in context among France’s largest, while the year of construction provides a historical reference point. The canal bridge is easy to reach from the Port de Plaisance de Moissac. As well as construction details, this gives you a practical tip for planning your visit.
Moissac lies on the Via Podiensis, the GR 65 pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The listed stages are Lauzerte–Durfort-Lacapelette–Moissac, at 24 kilometres, and Moissac–Boudou–Auvillar, at 21 kilometres. The second route is therefore three kilometres shorter than the first. This difference helps you compare the two stages by their stated distances when placing Moissac along the pilgrimage route.
Art Deco and Carved Capitals
The Kiosque de l’Uvarium was built in 1933 by architect Thilliet and decorated by painter Domergue Lagarde. Its rounded shape, metal framework and frescoes preserve the spirit of Art Deco. The building’s form, structure and artistic design each offer a different way to appreciate it. The kiosque is open to the public year-round; check access conditions before your visit.
The Cloître de Moissac has 76 carved capitals, each one different. They include scenes from the Bible and the lives of saints. Here, the focus is on the variety of individual works, while the kiosque is defined by the design of the building as a whole. The comparison highlights two distinct architectural and artistic features of Moissac.
Weekend Market and Annual Commemoration
Until 31 December 2028, the Marché de Moissac is scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings at Place des Récollets and in the market hall. If you are staying for the weekend, the market provides a clear time reference. If you are travelling after this period, check the current market days and opening times.
The statue of the Vierge du Calvaire was erected in 1858, and restoration work was completed in 2023. A commemorative ceremony and procession take place every year on 15 August. This site thus brings together a historical date of construction and an annual event. If your stay falls on 15 August, you can take the ceremony into account when planning your trip.
Discover Moissac Through Puzzles
