Saint-Marcel-Campes: Architectural History and Nature
Accommodation in Saint-Marcel-Campes
Saint-Marcel-Campes lies at the edge of a plateau, on a narrow rocky outcrop above the valley. Three distinct themes shape the area when planning a visit: medieval architectural history, a longer circular trail, and the landscape of the Liversenq dry slope. There are also donkey activities, fishing opportunities, and peaceful picnic spots. You can tailor your stay to culture, exercise, or nature experiences.
Architectural History in Stone
The Église de Campes offers several specific points of interest for exploring architectural history. Its portal features three pointed-arch archivolts with chamfered profiles. Archivolts are arched frames; here, three of them frame the portal. At the beginning of the 16th century, two side chapels were added on either side of the nave. The upper octagonal level dates from the same period. The Église de Campes was listed as a Monument historique by decree dated October 16, 1930.
The main construction phase of the Église Saint-Michel dates from the 12th century. A Romanesque porch may have served as a gateway. The church, including its holy water font, was listed as a Monument historique by decree dated December 7, 1970. Another stone monument is the 15th-century cross, which was classified as a Monument historique by decree dated August 2, 1893. The restoration years 1728 and 1859 are inscribed on the gable of the Église Saint-Martial de Cérat. In comparison, the main construction phase of Saint-Michel dates from the 12th century, while the additions to the Église de Campes followed in the early 16th century.
Circular Trail and Landscape
The Chemin du Grain de sel is a circular trail in Saint-Marcel-Campes. It is 10.8 kilometers long, and takes about three hours to walk. The trail starts and ends at the town hall car park, known as “Pointe à Pitre.” The approximate walking time makes it easy to plan the route as a several-hour activity. Check parking availability before setting off.
The Liversenq dry slope covers 115 hectares and is classified as a ZNIEFF. Its landscape includes calcareous grassland and rocky outcrops; it is also home to orchids and a remarkable bird population. The combination of limestone grassland, rocks, and plants makes the slope a destination in its own right for nature enthusiasts.
