Anyone planning a stay in Labarthe can explore nature trails and architectural history as two highlights. The wetlands give the landscape its distinctive character, while churches and a mill tell the story of the area’s long history. Together, they offer different points of interest to consider when planning your trip.

Wet meadows and trails in Labarthe

The Prairies humides de Labarthe are designated as a continental ZNIEFF type 1 within the municipality. They comprise three areas in the valleys of the Lemboulas and Lupte rivers. This landscape includes numerous wet meadows, ponds and small streams. A look at the area therefore takes in not only open meadows but also smaller bodies of water and the valley landscapes.

The INPN record, updated on June 12, 2024, lists the snake’s head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) as a threatened species protected at département level. According to this record, the wet meadows are among the last places where the snake’s head fritillary occurs in western Tarn-et-Garonne. The plant life is therefore a special feature of this natural area.

Two trails offer different experiences. The Circuit d’interprétation du Pigné is a two-kilometre educational trail in a landscaped wetland. It was created to protect and explain the ecological diversity of wetlands. By contrast, the Circuit des oiseaux de Labarthe runs through the Lupte Valley, across meadows and hillsides with diverse agricultural landscapes, and through wooded areas. Panoramic views can be enjoyed along the way. The circular route is 7.9 kilometres long, has an average elevation gain of 135 metres and takes approximately two and a half hours. It is described as family-friendly. If route length is important to your plans, you can compare the shorter Pigné trail with the longer circular route; an approximate duration is also provided for the Circuit des oiseaux. Check the route information again before setting out.

Churches and local history

Saint-Jean de Perges is one of three recently restored churches in the municipality of Labarthe. The Église Saint-Martin de la Capelle is first mentioned in a document from 1252. Its simple structure dates from the 17th or 18th century. The plan is elongated and rectangular, with a flat-ended chancel. A small bell gable with a single arched opening rises above the building.

Written sources document the Église de Nevèges from the 11th century onward. The medieval church was rebuilt in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The adjoining presbytery dates from the 16th to 18th centuries; the bell tower and portal were renovated in 1861. The early history of the site is also linked to a cautiously worded possibility: the original place of worship may have stood on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa. Column shafts, mosaic fragments and floor tiles were excavated there in the 19th century. A historical information board stands by the church.

The Moulin de Saint-Géraud

The history of the Moulin de Saint-Géraud goes back at least to a deed of sale from 1776. A bakery operated there until the mid-20th century. After it was purchased in 1999, the mill was restored and put back into operation. The collection includes objects from everyday life in the past, and forgotten crafts are also demonstrated. These demonstrations depend on the operator’s availability.

Visits to the mill are available year-round by telephone appointment. Only guided tours are offered, starting at 10:00, 14:30 and 16:30. If you are planning a visit, it is a good idea to confirm the date and start time by phone before your trip. This lets you include the tour in your plans without conflating it with your own choice of nature and church visits.
