Réalville is a royal bastide founded by King Philip IV the Fair in 1310. If you choose a destination for its historic character, this foundation provides a clear thematic starting point. Place Royale, covered arcades and old houses reveal different aspects of the bastide. Valleys, a plain and hills also shape the municipality—another aspect of its character.

Place Royale and the Bastide

Place Royale has always been the centre of community life. Markets, fairs and shops are part of its role; today, festivals and events add to them. When planning your trip, the square is a point of reference if you want to explore local history and public life together.

Since the bastide was founded, the covered arcades around Place Royale have served trade and housed shops. They also provide shelter from the rain and shade in strong sunlight, combining their historic commercial function with a practical purpose. Old brick and half-timbered houses line the bastide and add to the character of its built environment.

By decree dated 12 October 1948, some of the façades and roofs around Place Nationale were listed as historic monuments.

Church and Architectural Features

Réalville’s church was built in 1893. The bastide’s original church was destroyed during the Wars of Religion. One of the church’s exterior architectural details is an oculus, or round window. Its construction date, predecessor building and this façade detail represent different aspects of the town’s history.

A half-timbered house on Boulevard Jean Delzars is also featured on the discovery trail through Réalville. As route materials may be updated, check the latest version of the trail in advance.

Culture and Events

The cultural activity “Explorateurs: Réalville bastide royale” uses a game booklet to guide visitors in discovering the town’s history. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check its availability before your visit.

The “Marché gourmand, fête du village” event features tastings of local products and music on Place Royale. If this particular experience is important to your trip, check the dates in advance before planning your stay around it.

Landscape and Getting There

The Lère valley crosses Réalville from southwest to northeast; the Aveyron valley skirts Réalville to the south. The landscape also includes a plain and rolling hills to the north, west and east. The two valleys therefore have different stated relationships to the town: the Lère crosses the area, while the Aveyron valley skirts it to the south.

Réalville is served by bus route 812 between Montauban and Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Check the timetable before travelling, as bus routes and schedules can change. This lets you plan your journey around the available service without assuming a particular journey time or frequency.
