Montbrun lies on the right bank of the Lot, on a rocky spur above the river; the surrounding area is predominantly shaped by the Causse landscape. The D662 departmental road runs through the commune. The river landscape, cliffs and Causse give the area distinct landscape features.

Landscapes, viewpoints and gariottes

Rocher de Bédal is a viewpoint on the cliffs overlooking the meanders of the Lot. Montbrun faces the cliffs of Saut de la Mounine. Both are prominent landscape features around the area, but show different sides of the Lot Valley.

Montbrun’s sights also include gariottes: stone shepherds’ huts built from flat-laid stones. Some are still very well preserved. Alongside the cliffs and river valley, they represent another distinctive form of local building culture.

Bird species found on the cliffs include the Subalpine Warbler, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Crag Martin, Wallcreeper, Common Raven and Eurasian Eagle-Owl.

Dolmens, village and architectural history

According to the French Ministry of Culture, the Dolmen des Aguals, also known as the Combe de l'Ours, is characteristic of the megalithic architecture of the Causses du Quercy. Its protected site is also within the commune of Montbrun. The village and its surroundings are also designated as a protected site.

Montbrun’s castle ruins include the remains of a keep that may date from the 13th century. One tower is attributed to a building phase after the Hundred Years’ War, dated to the late 15th or early 16th century. A document from 1223 attests to the existence of the fortress of Montbrun.

The Church of Saint-Blaise is also part of Montbrun’s cultural heritage. It was due to be open during the summer months of 2024. If you would like to visit the church, check current access arrangements in advance.

The former railway line from Cahors to Capdenac ran as far as Montbrun halt at the entrance to the village. The former rail connection is therefore also part of the area’s history.

Routes and tours around Montbrun

The Voie verte en liberté route starts in Montbrun and follows a former railway line. It is accessible to people using manual or electric wheelchairs, as well as to pushchairs. This accessibility information may be an important consideration when choosing a route.

The Circuit de Gréalou offers views over the Lot Valley between Montbrun and Cadrieu. This challenging mountain bike route alternates between the Lot Valley and the Causse. Its route profile therefore differs from that of the Voie verte en liberté.

The ninth edition of the Trail des 3 Combes took place on 22 March 2026 in the Causse of Montbrun. For this edition, walks of 9 and 14 kilometres were offered. The walk passed through the village centre to Mas de Doucet and returned via Combe-Noire, which offers views over the Lot Valley.

A glimpse of local festival culture

At the 2024 Fête votive, a truffade meal prepared by members of the festival committee was offered again. This culinary event adds a concrete glimpse of a previous edition of the local festival to the area’s landscape and architectural history.
