Cazals offers several different reasons to choose it as a place to stay: medieval local history, religious architecture, rural technology and activities by the water. Would you like to focus on architectural history and historic trails, or are you especially interested in marked walking trails and Plan d’eau de la Cayre? The Sunday morning market is also part of local life.

Castrum and Pilgrimage Route

The Castrum de Cazals is a former fortified settlement dating from the 12th century, above the village. Traces of the walls, former fortified entrances, a corner tower and the site of the castle chapel can still be made out. The Castrum is classified as a “Monument historique.” These different features bring the history of the place to life, from its fortifications to the visible remains of the complex.

Cazals also lies on a secondary route, the “cami roumieu,” used by pilgrims on the Way of St James travelling on to Fumel via Rocamadour and its sanctuary.

Churches and Rural Technology

The architectural history of the Church of Notre-Dame de Ginolhac spans two periods: at the end of the 19th century, it was rebuilt on the foundations of an older Romanesque building. The Chapelle de Perboyre, in turn, was built between 1873 and 1875 in honour of Blessed Jean-Gabriel Perboyre. Its construction date and dedication place it in a different historical context from the Romanesque predecessor in Ginolhac.

The Atelier-Musée des Vieilles Mécaniques offers another perspective on Cazals. It focuses on the development of rural agricultural machinery from 1930 to the present day. The Atelier-Musée des Vieilles Mécaniques displays agricultural tractors, steam engines and stationary engines dating from 1930 to 1970. Most of the machines have been restored and are in working order.

Walking Trails and Water

Cazals has numerous marked walking trails. One specifically named longer option is the 9.7 km Circuit de l’église de Luziers loop, which leads to the medieval centre of Cazals. The route and its destination offer a clear point of reference if you would like to combine a walk with a connection to the village.

Water activities take centre stage at Plan d’eau de la Cayre. The lake covers 2.7 hectares. Its shaded banks and gentle slopes make it suitable for all fishing techniques. For swimming, Plan d’eau offers a supervised swimming area in July and August. This seasonal detail is especially useful if swimming is a factor in planning your trip.

The trails and the lake offer different things: the loop combines a specific route with the medieval centre, while fishing and seasonal swimming are the main attractions at Plan d’eau. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore decide whether you are more interested in historic local sights, walking or spending time by the water.

Sunday Morning Market

A market is held in Cazals on Sunday mornings, attracting producers, families and other visitors. Together with the Castrum, churches, museum, trails and lake, it gives a varied picture of the village, without requiring every visitor to plan their trip around the same interests.
