Nestier: Calvaire du Mont Arès and Ôcybelles
Accommodation in Nestier
Nestier offers two different perspectives to consider when planning your trip: outdoor recreation at Ôcybelles, and cultural heritage and hiking at the Calvaire du Mont Arès. The bathing area includes pools, trails and a picnic area; at Mont Arès, the twelve chapels, the hilltop chapel overlooking the Neste plain and the Le Mont Arès hike shape the experience. This lets you choose between a recreational area and a route with several cultural stops.
Ôcybelles: bathing area and recreation
Ôcybelles is a natural biological bathing area on the border between Saint Laurent de Neste and Nestier. It is located in a 1.5-hectare, tree-filled recreational area. A fitness trail runs around the natural pools; the grounds also include a walking trail, outdoor games and a picnic area. The games facilities include a beach volleyball court. So, in addition to the bathing area, the site offers outdoor exercise and a place to picnic. The fitness and walking trails offer a different kind of activity from the beach volleyball court. If you are planning to spend time outdoors during your trip, you can take the site's different uses into account.
Calvaire du Mont Arès and cultural heritage
The Calvaire du Mont Arès was built with twelve chapels on Mont Arès and was added to the supplementary list of French historic monuments in 1989. The chapel at the summit overlooks the Neste plain. The chapels define the architectural form of the Stations of the Cross; the view adds a connection to the landscape to this historical aspect. The Calvaire can be reached on foot. The Calvaire also has an open-air theatre that hosts cultural events. If you would like to include an event in your trip plans, check its dates in advance. A separate historical point concerns the Eglise Nestier: it stands on the site of the medieval motte known as Eth Castérot. The year 1989 refers to the Calvaire's addition to the monument list; the motte on the church site is medieval.
Hike or discovery route
The Le Mont Arès hike starts in Nestier and follows the GR78, a route through the Pyrenean foothills. After descending, the trail passes the oratories of the Stations of the Cross, crosses a former quarry and continues to the Eglise Nestier. The route thus combines its connection to the GR78 with several named stops along the way to the church. For planning purposes, the section after the descent is especially clear: the oratories are followed by the former quarry and the Eglise Nestier. You can therefore think of the route as a hike with several stops, rather than viewing the Calvaire as a single destination.
Chronos published the discovery route “Montons au calvaire!” for the 2026 season. It covers 2.5 km through the streets of Nestier. The difference is clear: the Chronos route passes through the village, while Le Mont Arès follows the GR78 and, after the descent, leads to the oratories, across the former quarry and on to the church. You can therefore choose between a discovery route through the streets and a hike with stops along the Stations of the Cross. Before planning, check whether the Chronos route is currently available.
