Galan: Bastide History, Routes and Landscape
Accommodation in Galan
Galan lies on a ridge between the Baïsolle and Baïse valleys. Its rural landscape alternates between cultivated terraces and wooded slopes. Two routes start in Galan or pass through the town: hiking trails explore the landscape, while the Vélosud / V81 cycling route runs through it. This offers several specific ways to get to know Galan: its medieval bastide, historic buildings, hiking times and a recurring summer event.
Historic Buildings in Galan
The Tour-Porte Sud is the last monumental remnant of Galan’s former town walls. The fortified stone tower has a footprint of 6.20 × 5.50 metres. Its vaulted gateway is 2.40 metres wide and more than 3 metres high. These measurements give a specific sense of the tower’s footprint and gateway. By decree dated 13 March 1946, the Tour-Porte Sud was added to the supplementary register of historic monuments.
The Halle-Mairie also combines a building’s history with its former function in the town: a market was held beneath the hall every Thursday from 1821 to 1958. By decree dated 11 October 1984, the Halle-Mairie was added to the register of historic monuments. The Église Saint-Julien is notable for its construction history. It was built from 1540 to 1549 on the site of an older building. The town fortifications, market use and church’s construction history thus provide different historical points of reference in Galan.
Summer Festival and Regional Specialty
The Fête de la Tourte Pyrénéenne is part of Galan’s culinary heritage. This recurring summer festival centres on a specialty typical of the Bigorre region. It complements the historic buildings and hiking routes, which are there year-round, with a seasonal occasion. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates in advance for the year you plan to travel.
Hiking and Cycling
The La Serre hiking trail is 14 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 45 minutes. It starts and ends in Galan, passes through woodland, follows a ridge path and crosses the Baïsole via a footbridge. The route description therefore combines specific distance and time information with several trail features. This lets you take both the distance and estimated walking time into account when planning.
Les Côteaux starts at the medieval bastide of Galan and offers views of the Pyrenees range. There is also the option of hiking two loop routes along the D23 between Sabarros and Recurt; each takes 2.5 hours. For comparison, La Serre is estimated to take 3 hours and 45 minutes, while each Les Côteaux loop takes 2.5 hours. This lets you compare the stated walking times without implying anything about the length of the loops.
A cycling route also passes through Galan: the Vélosud / V81 continues to Lannemezan and then towards Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges. In addition to the hiking trails, this provides a cycling route with named destinations and a clearly described direction. Together with La Serre, which starts and ends in Galan, it shows two different route patterns: a hiking trail that starts and ends in town, and a cycling route that passes through Galan on its way onward.
