For a stay in Uz, you can plan hikes with a variety of themes: trails lead to chapels, through forests and to views of the surrounding peaks. A mountain bike loop also passes through the village. This gives you both specific ideas for a hike and a cycling route with a defined mix of terrain.

Chapelle de Pouey-Aspe: Hiking and History

The Chapelle de Pouey-Aspe was built in the 19th century on the site of the hermitage of Saint Savin. It can only be reached from Uz via a marked hiking trail. The route involves an elevation gain of around 300 metres and takes approximately 45 minutes to walk. These two figures help you plan the outing in terms of time and ascent: the walking time is approximate, while the elevation gain indicates the climb. This gives you a specific starting point for planning a day hike to the chapel.

Forest, Heather and Summit Views

Le Chemin des Chapelles passes through Uz. Its ascent begins at the village washhouse and continues through the forest. On the return, the trail leaves the forest and passes through heather and ferns, opening up views of the surrounding peaks. The route thus shifts from a wooded climb to a return journey through more open vegetation with views. If you want to take in not only a destination but also changing scenery during a hike, you can include these sections in your plans.

The Ancien chemin des facteurs

A variant of the L'Ancien chemin des facteurs trail provides access to the Chapelle de Pouyaspé from the village washhouse. The path crosses the small Col de Pourtesous and then descends through the remains of an old slate quarry. On the section towards Uz, it passes pastures and a barn; after a footbridge, the trail climbs through the forest. The pass, slate quarry remains, pastures and forest climb make the different landscapes along this route easy to picture.

Mountain Biking Through Uz

The Circuit VTT n°5 – Vallée d'Argelès – Le Grand Tour de Vallée mountain bike route passes through Uz and forms part of a loop through the Vallée d'Argelès. Its composition is precisely divided: 75 percent singletrack, 15 percent trails and 10 percent roads. Singletrack makes up the largest share, at three quarters of the route; trails and roads complete the mix of terrain. This gives you a specific point of comparison if you are considering a mountain bike ride rather than a hike.

Different Options for Planning Your Outings

Among the outings, the hike to the Chapelle de Pouey-Aspe stands out for its approximate walking time and elevation gain. The other two hiking trails can be distinguished by their landscapes: forest and summit views on the Chemin des Chapelles, and a pass and slate quarry remains on the Ancien chemin des facteurs. For the mountain bike loop, the proportions of the different trail surfaces provide a separate point of comparison. This lets you sort the outings by the activity you want and the scenery you would like to experience along the way.
