Discover Sers through two specific themes: the Romanesque Église Saint-Vincent and several hiking trails that pass through the commune. For planning, compare the route type, duration and elevation gain. There are also notable places along the way, from an information board to an oratory.

Église Saint-Vincent and its architectural features

Église Saint-Vincent dates from the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Vincent. A Romanesque church, it has a half-dome apse and a crenellated gable tower with an added watchtower. These features give the building its distinctive character: the apse emphasizes rounded forms, while the tower, with its crenellations and added watchtower, creates a different architectural effect.

The church is open daily. As current access arrangements may change, it is best to check visiting options before your visit.

Compare hikes by duration and route type

The “Le lac Bleu” route passes through Sers and Beaucens. It is described as a moderately difficult out-and-back hike of 13.5 kilometres, taking five hours and 30 minutes. The ascent and descent each involve 754 metres of elevation gain. The route crosses the Col d’Aoube and reaches a valley with Lac Vert and Lac Bleu. Conditions are especially important for this hike: hiking in snow and poor visibility is not recommended, and seasonal access in the mountains may vary.

A shorter option is “Le belvédère de la croix Saint-Justin”: this easy loop passes through Barèges and Sers, is 4.9 kilometres long and is listed as taking two hours and 15 minutes. It is marked GR and PR. At the small Col de Saint-Justin, the route leads to an information board and the Oratory of Saint-Justin. This hike is not recommended in winter because of the avalanche corridors.

“Les villages de Labatsus” focuses on village paths and the transition into the village centre. This moderately difficult loop is nine kilometres long, takes three hours and 30 minutes, and is also marked GR and PR. It crosses the Bastan via a footbridge and passes by the Église de Sers on its way into the village centre. The route can also be distinguished by its course: the river crossing and the path through the village centre are among the described stops.

In direct comparison, the Saint-Justin loop is both the shortest and the quickest according to the stated duration. Labatsus falls between the two in distance and time; at 13.5 kilometres and five and a half hours, Lac Bleu has the greatest time and distance requirements of the three routes listed. The two moderately difficult hikes also differ in type: Labatsus is a loop, while Lac Bleu is an out-and-back hike.

Saint-Justin: history and views

The Oratory of Saint-Justin is dedicated to Justin, the first evangelist of Bigorre. It stands on the site of a former priory and chapel that fell into ruin in the 12th century. The oratory and the Saint-Justin cross were reconstructed in 1990 and are located at an altitude of 1,300 metres. From there, the view extends to Barèges, Viella, Betpouey and Luz Saint Sauveur.

La Croix de Saint-Justin is free to access; visits are possible at any time without a guide. As access arrangements may change, it is best to confirm current visiting options in advance. This lets you combine the information with the directions to the board and oratory, without confusing the site’s historical significance with practical visiting arrangements.

Maison du Tourmalet at the Col du Tourmalet

The Maison du Tourmalet is located at the Col du Tourmalet, at an altitude of 2,115 metres. Its exhibition space is beneath a 360-degree dome. The exhibition “Le Col des Géants” tells the story of the pass and its use in the Tour de France. The animated film “NOX, LE VOYAGE DANS LA NUIT” raises awareness of light pollution. Two different subjects are presented there: the history of the pass and the perception of artificial light.
