Discover Raon-L'étape: Fountains, Architecture and Trails
Accommodation in Raon-L'étape
For a trip to Raon-L'étape, you can explore its architectural history, fountains and trails as different areas of interest. The buildings reflect the city's historical development, while the fountains draw on mythological and allegorical motifs. For outdoor activity, there is a marked circular trail with designated points of interest. You can therefore plan your trip around cultural history, a guided fountain tour for groups or a hike.
Architecture and Historical Connections
Monumental buildings made from pink Vosges sandstone stand in the city centre. They are linked to the former timber rafting trade on the Meurthe and the prosperity it brought to the city. This gives the architectural history a specific economic context: the buildings also represent a time when timber rafting contributed to Raon-L'étape's prosperity.
The Church of Saint-Luc has imposing columns and a symphonic organ. Its stained-glass windows have been classified as a Monument historique since 1986. The Halle aux Blés, restored in 2002, serves a different cultural purpose: it houses the municipal theatre, which also functions as a cinema, as well as the Espace Émile Gallé exhibition space. The city thus brings together religious architecture, theatre and cinema, and an exhibition space as distinct aspects of its cultural heritage.
The Motel de l'Eau Vive is also architecturally remarkable: it includes contemporary “bubble houses” designed by Swiss architect Pascal Haüsermann in the late 1960s. They have been classified as a Monument historique since 2014. The Menhir Pierre-Borne offers a different point of interest. This regularly shaped monolith of pink granite rises more than three metres above the ground and has been classified as a Monument historique since 21 May 1925. The dates mark distinct milestones: the design and classification of the bubble houses, on the one hand, and the classification of the menhir, on the other.
Fountains and Their Motifs
The fountains of Raon-L'étape mainly draw on Greco-Roman mythology and allegory. The Fontaine des Quatre Lions is considered a symbol of the city. Together with the sandstone buildings, they create an interesting contrast: while the buildings are associated with the former timber rafting trade and prosperity, the fountains focus on mythological and allegorical themes.
Guided tours of the fountains are offered to groups throughout the year; advance booking is required. If you would like to include a tour in your plans, bear this group requirement in mind.
Hiking Trails and Routes
The Circuit pédestre - Bon Dieu is a permanently accessible, marked circular trail starting from Raon-L'étape. It is nine kilometres long and rated moderate. Points of interest along the route include the Menhir Pierre-Borne, the Roche des Sacrifices, the Borne de l'Evêché and the Oratoire du Bon Dieu. The construction date of the small chapel is also known: it was built in 1787. Its defined circular route, distance and named points of interest make it a practical option for anyone planning to spend time on foot.
Another route description is for the Voie verte de la Vallée de la Plaine. It is 27.3 kilometres long and is a non-motorised multi-use route. It mostly follows the valley near the La Plaine river; in places, it uses the route of the former railway. Compared with the nine-kilometre circular trail, the routes differ in both length and format: the Circuit pédestre - Bon Dieu is a moderate, marked loop starting from Raon-L'étape, while the Voie verte is a longer multi-use route associated with the valley and river.
