Meuse: Heritage, Forests and Lac de Madine
Accommodation in Meuse
Routes and cultural sites
The Ligier Richier Route offers a tangible way to explore the region’s culture: it connects historic places from Bar-le-Duc via Clermont-en-Argonne, Étain, Génicourt-sur-Meuse and Hattonchâtel to Saint-Mihiel. The focus is therefore not on a single building, but on a series of stops. For trip planning, the route can be seen as a thread linking the places named above.
The library of Abbaye Saint-Michel preserves 70 manuscripts and 9,000 printed books. These figures give a concrete sense of the different collections. In Verdun, the Centre Mondial de la Paix is housed in the former episcopal palace. Fort de Douaumont is considered the most powerful fortification in Verdun’s system of forts. These places highlight different aspects of history: written heritage, a historic building and fortification architecture.
The Citadelle souterraine is another distinct site, with its own special way of presenting history. It is one of the 25 key stops on Verdun’s discovery route. A guided tour in a rail car takes visitors through the underground galleries using augmented reality. By contrast, Ouvrage de la Falouse preserves wartime towers and an infantry sentry post. Life behind the front is recreated in a 150-metre-long trench. The surviving structures and reconstructed scene thus offer different ways to engage with history.
The Land Of Memory programme provides a cross-border framework connecting Belgium, Luxembourg and Meuse. The programme includes an educational website and the travelling exhibition Our Common Heritage.
Forests, wetlands and wildlife
Much of the state forests of Verdun and Mort-Homme grew out of the reforestation of former First World War battlefields. They provide habitats for the yellow-bellied toad and the great crested newt; both are amphibians of Community interest. The origins of the forests and the habitats they provide for these two species offer two different perspectives on this landscape.
The Natura 2000 corridor of the Meuse includes forts, concrete shelters, tunnels and saps. These structures can provide bats with habitat during hibernation and the breeding season. The focus here is therefore not only on the structures themselves, but also on their potential importance as roosting sites for wildlife.
Lac de Madine is a 1,100-hectare wetland, a Natura 2000 site and a national hunting and wildlife reserve. An interpretation trail and an observatory are provided for discovering nature. At the same lake, the focus is therefore both on the features of a large protected area and on specific facilities for observing nature.
Lac de Madine: activities and cycling
At the Madine leisure centre, swimming, fishing and water sports are available during the warmer months. The visitor centre also offers golf and mountain bike rentals. The seasonal limitation is worth bearing in mind when planning: water sports, swimming and fishing are listed for the warmer months, while golf and bike rentals are additional activities offered at the visitor centre.
The full route around Lac de Madine and its shores is more than 18 kilometres long and can be covered on foot or by bike. The Lac de Madine loop is also listed as number 15 among the 22 mountain biking routes in Meuse. Two bike rental locations are listed for the loop: Madine Cycles and Divotourbiking.
Other cycling options have different points of interest. La Meuse à Vélo is designated as a European cycle route. Butte de Montsec rises to 377 metres and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and Lac de Madine. For trip planning, you can therefore choose between a longer loop around the lake, a listed mountain biking route and a designated European cycle route. If you’re looking for a hotel in Meuse, these specific interests can help you choose a destination.
