Étain: Cultural History and Nature
Accommodation in Étain
When looking for a hotel in Étain, you can first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: architectural history, a museum experience, or nature and outdoor trails. Specific points of interest include Saint-Martin Church, the town hall, the Musée des Jouets Petitcollin, and the Bois de Tilly.
Saint-Martin Church and La Piéta
Saint-Martin Church preserves architectural elements dating from the 12th century. Five bays of the nave date from the 13th century, with additions from the 14th century. The choir also has its own building history: its reconstruction began in 1437 and was funded by Guillaume Huin, a future cardinal who was born in Étain. The different dates make it possible to distinguish several phases of construction rather than assign the church to a single period.
La Piéta is in the Chapelle du Sacré Cœur and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1905. The life-size depiction shows the Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus Christ on her knees. Saint-Martin therefore brings together architectural history and a precisely described work of art as distinct cultural themes. Those interested in church architecture can focus on the elements from different periods; those who prefer religious art will find a clearly defined subject in La Piéta.
Reconstruction and a visit to the town hall
The town hall is notable for its reconstruction, which was entrusted to Joseph Hornecker and carried out from 1922 to 1926. The original layout of the main façade was preserved. An important detail for your visit is the access rule: during town hall opening hours, only the entrance hall is accessible; the reception room is not open to visitors. Check the opening hours before planning and bear in mind that a visit is limited to the entrance hall.
Toy history and a virtual doll
The Musée des Jouets Petitcollin offers a different focus from the town’s buildings. A sound-and-light presentation conveys the history of toy manufacturing, with the mascots Viny and Cellulo guiding visitors through the experience. Families can also create their own virtual doll on a tablet. The cultural offering thus includes historic architecture and art, as well as an immersive presentation about manufacturing and a digital creative activity. Before visiting, check the current opening hours and whether the tablet activity is available.
Trails in the Bois de Tilly
The Bois de Tilly offers several routes of different lengths: an 8.3 km mountain biking route, a 7.9 km hiking route, a 3.5 km trail, and a 1.4 km botanical trail. This lets you compare the mountain biking and hiking options with the shorter trails; the botanical trail is the shortest of the four routes listed.
Another specific route is the 17.3 km circular trail “Du bois de Tilly au fil de l'Orne.” It starts at the Halle d'Étain, 2 rue des Casernes, and was created in July 2023. The distances help you distinguish between the route options by length. The start point and distance are given here for the circular trail; the four routes in the Bois are additionally distinguished by mountain biking, hiking, and trail type.
Biodiversity and the renaturalized Orne
Nature in the Bois de Tilly includes local tree, shrub, amphibian, and mammal species. These include sessile oak, English oak, birch, wild cherry, wild pear, service tree, aspen, and hornbeam, as well as European spindle, cornelian cherry, and hawthorn. Frogs, toads, salamanders, Alpine newts, and smooth newts are also found here; roe deer and squirrels are among the mammals mentioned. The species thus range from trees and shrubs to amphibians and mammals.
The renaturalized Orne in Étain is designated an Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) for its landscape value and biodiversity. This highlights two distinct nature themes: the local species in the Bois de Tilly, and the landscape and biodiversity values that underpin the Orne’s designation.
