Tarnac: History, Routes and Moorland
Accommodation in Tarnac
When looking for a hotel in Tarnac, it is worth considering the themes that shape the area: the history of the Resistance, historic buildings, and routes connected with moors and rivers. The sights and activities offer different points of focus. When planning, you can decide whether you are more interested in historical context, architectural history, or the landscape. The time of year also plays a clear role in the activities at Plan d’eau de l'Enclose.
History, the Resistance and Architecture
The Chemin de la Résistance makes history the focus of a route in Tarnac. Information panels explain the history of the Resistance in Tarnac and the Maquis in Limousin; they also cover Armand Gatti. The “Journal d’un maquisard” route also has a connection to Gatti. It is eight kilometres long and follows a path created by the municipality and dedicated to Armand Gatti. The two approaches therefore differ: the Chemin focuses on the topics explained along the route, while the route focuses on its length and dedication. Check the current path conditions before setting out.
The Church of Saint-Gilles and Saint-Georges combines Romanesque sections dating from the 12th century with a second, Gothic nave added in the 14th century. Close to the church is the 17th-century Fontaine Saint-Georges, which also includes a washhouse. The dates offer a concrete comparison: medieval building phases in the church and a fountain with washhouse from a later period.
Routes and Landscapes
The “Landes et Tourbières” route starts in Tarnac and crosses the Gouttenègre bridge. A moor lies directly to its right. The bridge and the moor are thus two landmarks positioned in immediate relation to one another in the route description. You should also check the current path conditions before setting out on this route.
“Moulins et rochers” offers a different perspective on the landscape: this route also starts in Tarnac and runs partly alongside the Vienne. The Vienne Valley lies near Tarnac, is deeply incised, and is considered an ecosystem of great importance because of its habitats and species. It is part of the Natura 2000 network. While the route description mentions a stretch alongside the river, the valley description focuses on habitats, species and the importance of the ecosystem.
Historic Site and Seasonal Activities
At the summit of Puy Murat there is a viewpoint with the barely visible ruins of a medieval fortress, the Donjon de Murat. The Puy Murat site has been listed as a historic monument since 1 February 1993. The viewpoint and the barely visible remains are different aspects of the site: the ruins provide the historical connection, while their limited visibility is something to bear in mind when setting expectations.
Plan d'eau de l'Enclose is a three-hectare lake. Kayaking, mountain biking and archery are offered there in July and August. These activities are limited to those two months. If you would like to include any of them, plan your trip for July or August and check that the period fits your dates.
