Chasteaux offers several ways to plan your trip: Lac du Causse, hiking trails and buildings with a long history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Chasteaux, you can choose your focus based on whether you want your stay to revolve around the water, a hike or cultural history.

Lac du Causse and views from the heights

Lac du Causse stretches through the Couze Valley at the foot of the villages of Chasteaux and Lissac. For a different view of the landscape, visit the square in front of Chasteaux town hall: it is a viewpoint overlooking the limestone plateaus of Puy Lagarde. The valley and plateau offer two different perspectives on the landscape. The Chasteaux site covers 36 hectares and was listed as a protected site (“site inscrit”) by ministerial decree on September 20, 1943.

Water sports at the lake

Major rowing regattas take place at Lac du Causse. There is also infrastructure for canoeing and kayaking. The Club de Ski nautique A.S.N.B.C. in Chasteaux offers water-skiing lessons. These activities represent different forms of water sports: regattas are the competitive aspect, while canoeing, kayaking and water skiing offer other ways to get active. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you’re particularly interested in rowing, paddling or water skiing.

Circular trails and planning your time

At Montagne Pelée, there is a moderately difficult 5-kilometre circular hiking trail that takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes. Its length, difficulty and estimated duration provide a concrete guide for planning your time. Since route information can change, check it locally before setting out.

The Les trois villages du Causse route is a circular trail around typical villages of the Causse, passing Romanesque churches, the remains of Couzages and numerous viewpoints. It can therefore be characterised primarily by its villages, buildings and scenic spots. By contrast, the circular trail at Montagne Pelée provides specific information on distance and duration. This lets you compare the two routes based on their different points of reference.

Church, village houses and Château de Couzages

The Church of Saint-Christophe, on the heights of Chasteaux, dates from the 15th century. Its square bell tower with portal stands on the ridge and offers balcony-like views over the Couze Valley. The village consists of old houses made of pink-tinted limestone, often adorned with vine trellises.

Château de Couzages overlooked the Couze Valley and belonged to the Vicomté de Turenne. The château’s remains and grounds have been classified as a historic monument since February 26, 1996. The church, houses and château ruins give Chasteaux’s cultural history different contours: a 15th-century date, a description of the village and a historical connection to the Vicomté de Turenne.
