Saint-Robert combines a medieval village setting with the landscapes of the Yssandonnais. The village stands on the limestone outcrop of Murel Hill, reaching an altitude of up to 350 metres. Since 1982, Saint-Robert has held the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” label. For your stay, you can choose from a range of themes: the church and the Chapelle du Verneuil, art and village history, or walking, cycling and nature.

A village between two river valleys

Saint-Robert offers views towards Ayen over the Elle Valley, a tributary of the Vézère, and towards Segonzac over the Dalon Valley, a tributary of the Auvézère. These two viewpoints look out over distinct river landscapes. The Jardin Philippe Ranoux also overlooks the Elle Valley and the rolling countryside of the Yssandonnais: it has two terraces with panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The municipality also includes three ZNIEFF type I areas, which are of significant local ecological importance. Walnut groves also shape the surroundings; some are located at the entrances to the medieval village centre. Saint-Robert is also on the Route de la noix, which runs through the green valleys of Corrèze, Dordogne and Lot, planted with walnut trees.

Church, chapel and village history

The Church of Saint-Robert preserves around 60 original capitals, 51 of which remain in their original locations. Capitals are the upper parts of columns or piers. These figures therefore describe both the number of original capitals and, for a large proportion of them, their preservation in their original positions. The church also houses a 13th-century Spanish crucifix, which was classified as a historic object in 1925.

The Chapelle du Verneuil dates from the 16th century and is the only surviving remnant of Château Verneuil. The restored chapel welcomes visitors and hosts a permanent exhibition of contemporary art. Here, two distinct periods of village history come together: the historic building and the contemporary works on display.

More recent cultural history is also part of the village: in 1983, the medieval village served as a filming location for the television series “Des Grives aux Loups”, based on a novel by Claude Michelet. The Festival de Saint Robert is accompanied by an art exhibition; programme details vary by season.

Plan your stay and find a hotel

When looking for a hotel in Saint-Robert, it helps to decide on the main focus of your trip first. If you are particularly interested in architectural history and art, the church and the Chapelle du Verneuil are the main attractions; the chapel welcomes visitors. If your stay is focused on landscapes and activities, you can also explore the viewpoints, the walk between Saint-Robert and Ayen, or the cycling and geocaching options. These themes address different aspects of planning your trip without requiring you to fit every activity into a single day.
