If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Sérandon, you can plan your trip around specific trails and sights. Routes vary in length, difficulty and layout. There is also the gorge landscape at the Gratte-Bruyère viewpoint, Romanesque architecture and the rural garden Jardin Grelinette et Pinceaux. This lets you decide in advance whether hiking, scenery, architectural history or a visit to a garden should be the focus of your trip.

Hiking: Compare trails by length and route layout

The Route des Ajustants is an easy, linear route covering 21.0 kilometres and starting at the Gratte-Bruyère viewpoint. It follows the valley through native deciduous forests and passes small, cascading streams. The route also passes the Pont des Ajustants and the Pont de Saint Projet. It goes through a historic area of resistance, linking the journey through the landscape with this historical connection.

The Sentier de Tony is 8.0 kilometres long and moderately difficult. It passes through a wild natural landscape in the gorges of the Triouzoune and typical rural villages, and offers views of the Monts d’Auvergne. The ruins of the former Moulin de Tony lie along the way. The Sentier des gorges is also moderately difficult, but at 14.0 kilometres it is longer and is laid out as a circular route. It first leads into the Dordogne gorges, then across an agricultural plateau through Vernéjoux, Enval and Monange. A more difficult variant of the trail descends to the banks of the Dordogne.

Length is not the only factor to consider: the Sentier des gorges is described as a circular route, while the Route des Ajustants is linear. The two moderately difficult trails also differ in length; the Sentier de Tony features natural scenery, villages and views along the way, while the Sentier des gorges alternates between gorge and plateau. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Gratte-Bruyère: Gorge views and nature

The Gratte-Bruyère site is in the municipality of Sérandon, at the confluence of the Dordogne and Sumène. From the viewpoint, you can see across the gorges of the Haute-Dordogne: forests and rocks frame the Dordogne as it flows below the viewpoint. The Haute-Dordogne valley at Gratte-Bruyère is considered a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is part of the Natura 2000 network.

Gratte-Bruyère is also a good place to observe birds of prey. Species found there include the peregrine falcon, booted eagle and red kite. For multi-day hikes, La Dordogne de Villages en Barrages is another option: it leads, among other places, to the Gratte-Bruyère site. This makes the area both a specific viewpoint and a point of interest along a longer hiking route.

Churches, mill and garden

The Eglise de Sérandon is a Romanesque parish church. Its portal is decorated with symbolic figures and animals. The Eglise Sainte-Radegonde has a single-nave church building dating from the 12th century; in the 15th century, it was divided into three naves and vaulted. The two descriptions offer different points of reference for appreciating religious architecture: the Romanesque portal with its figures and animals, and the architectural development of the nave.

At Jardin Grelinette et Pinceaux, you can wander through a rural garden for free and at your own pace. The garden includes cultivated and wooded areas, water features and paintings. As opening hours vary by season, check the visiting arrangements before planning your visit. This allows you to fit a garden visit in with the trails and sights without tying it to a particular hiking route.

Water activities at Lac de la Triouzoune

Lac de la Triouzoune lies between Neuvic, Liginiac and Sérandon. You can explore the lake by canoe, boat or rowboat. The availability of these water activities may vary by season, so check in advance which options are available when you plan to visit. Your trip planning can therefore bring together a range of interests: hiking trails with stated lengths and difficulty levels, views and nature at Gratte-Bruyère, and water activities at the lake.
