Monestier-Merlines combines several hiking trails with landscapes and historic sites around the Chavanon Valley. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, the different routes and their stated durations and elevation profiles can help with planning: the options described range from a moderately difficult circular hike to a technically demanding mountain biking route.

Hiking at the Chavanon

The Les Ermites circular hike is 11 km long, takes 3 hours 30 minutes, and includes 240 metres of elevation gain. It is rated moderate. One section of the trail runs alongside the Chavanon, while another follows a former railway line for 1 km. These details give you concrete points of comparison for planning the time and ascent. The Chavanon Valley is considered a wild landscape of the Massif Central, home to remarkable and rare species.

The De Feyt Ă  Monestier route also leads to the water: the descent takes you down to the banks of the Chavanon; the descent to the river and the subsequent ascent include two more technically challenging sections. Further afield in the region, the road that passes a cemetery along the route offers a remarkable view of Puy de Sancy, the highest volcano in mainland France. Here, a specific challenge on the trail and a viewpoint along the route come together.

Les Ruisseaux de Gioux offers a different perspective. On the return through the Chavanon gorges, the route follows a former railway line. The Chavanon is designated as a Natura 2000 site along its entire length and is known for its trout. The routes therefore differ in more than just length or elevation gain: Les Ermites focuses on the details of the circular hike and the trail by the river, while Les Ruisseaux de Gioux takes you back through the gorges.

Mountain biking and orienteering

Les Gorges du Chavanon is a 29.2 km mountain biking circuit with a stated duration of 3 hours 30 minutes. It has 829 metres of elevation gain and 829 metres of descent. Steep climbs and descents, very technically demanding sections on damaged trails, and stretches through gorges and across plateaus define its character. Check the technical conditions and trail markings before setting off, as conditions on the technical sections can change.

A comparison with Les Ermites highlights the different demands without reducing the routes to a single figure: both are listed as taking 3 hours 30 minutes, but the mountain biking circuit is considerably longer and has substantially more elevation gain and descent than the hike. If you would like to include an activity with orienteering elements, the Étang de l’Abeille has a detailed map and numbered checkpoints with punches. The map and checkpoints give this activity a different structure from the hiking and mountain biking routes described.

Church, monastic complex, and historic sites

The architectural history is also part of Monestier-Merlines’ character: the parish church of Saint-Laurent is a two-bay church dating from the 13th century. It underwent extensive restoration between 1869 and 1873. Its medieval origins and later restoration are two distinct chapters in its history.

The Chavanon Valley is also home to a preserved monastic complex associated with Benedictine hermits who settled there from the 12th century onward. La Vervialle is a very old village in the commune of Monestier-Merlines, above the Chavanon gorges, and is associated with the hermit Jean des Chèvres. The church, monastic complex, and village each represent their own historical connections; the information about the hermits in the valley and Jean des Chèvres should not be combined into a shared history unsupported by the facts.

Getting there and planning

For connections to Clermont-Ferrand, Tulle, and Brive, the A89 motorway provides access via junction 24 Ussel-Est, 8 km away, and junction 25 St-Julien-Sancy, 10 km away. Check the junctions before you travel. In addition to the duration, the stated elevation gain and the character of each route can help you choose a tour: the hiking trails, mountain biking circuit, and orienteering at Étang de l’Abeille offer different points of reference.
