Affieux: Culture, Château and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Affieux
Affieux offers plenty to explore during a stay focused on architectural history and hiking. The Château and Saint-Pardoux Church represent different chapters in the town’s history, while trails such as Le Rocher des Folles, the Couloir à Papillons and the Piste des légendes lead through landscapes and nature with distinct features. When planning your trip, it’s worth deciding on your main focus first: a longer circular hike, a shorter nature trail or historic architecture.
Culture and Architectural History
The Château in Affieux was built in 1636. Its outbuildings and the west façade of the residential building were altered in the 18th century; the date 1781 is inscribed on the eastern extensions. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s earlier origins from later alterations. The Château is privately owned. Check in advance whether visits are possible and under what conditions.
Saint-Pardoux Church has been documented since the 12th century and has been restored. Its tabernacle altar dates from the 17th century and is classified as a historic monument. The portal is built in the Limousin style and decorated with a frieze of capitals, human masks and an animal. The historical details relate to different elements: the church’s long-documented history and the later altar. The portal adds specific decorative details to these periods.
The Gare d’Affieux has also been restored. Its features include tracks, two carriages, an old hydraulic crane and a clock. If you plan to visit the site, check access in advance.
Hiking Trails and Nature Spots
The Le Rocher des Folles circular hike is 9 km long, takes about three hours and has an elevation gain of 224 metres. The route alternates between open and wooded landscapes, crosses hills and offers views of the surrounding countryside. It passes the Étang de Linâtre and a restored washhouse. The route also returns to the starting point.
There are picnic tables at the Étang de Linâtre, and parts of the site are shaded. In 2026, fishing there was permitted from 14 March to 20 September. If you plan to fish at a later date, check the applicable fishing dates in advance.
The BGA Parc covers almost 12 hectares in the commune of Affieux. The Couloir Ă Papillons is a 3 km circular trail with 14 planting zones. Along the route are a natural stream, a temple and wildlife corridors. The circular trail is open to the public year-round for free visits; check accessibility before your visit.
The Piste des légendes leads to the Pierre des Druides. The granite block lies at an altitude of 732 metres and has small hollows formed by erosion. The shaded hike there offers a spectacular view of the Monédières. The trails therefore lead to quite different destinations: Le Rocher des Folles takes you to the Étang and through varied landscapes, while the Piste des légendes leads to a single granite block and views of the Monédières.
